Re: Tax programs for Canadian compatible with Linux?

My recommendation? Use an 'agnostic' web-based tax prep web site. I have been using SimpleTax for years now, and I think it is great!

Re: Wacom CTE-440 Tablet in Mint

Thanks again pdc_2. I just tried it on another fresh install of Linux Mint 18.2 Mate, and same situation for me. I guess I need someone to test the CTE-440 model directly. Another possibility is that there is something wrong with my tablet (though the scroll wheel and mouse buttons work just fine). ...

Re: Wacom CTE-440 Tablet in Mint

Thanks pdc_2 for your links. These, and many others I have read, contain a lot of useful/detailed information. Unfortunately for me, many of them seem to be so old that I do not know if the suggestions/techniques they offer are still useful or relevant. I guess what I really need is for someone with...

Wacom CTE-440 Tablet in Mint

Having Googled for a good while with no clear answers, it is time to ask here :) I am running LMDE2 (not sure that it matters that this is the exact flavor of Linux Mint I am running, but whatever) and everything I can see on the command line seems to indicate that my Wacom CTE-440 tablet has been c...

Re: Sandisk USB3 Ultra Fit doesn't work in USB 3 port

I love and use Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 drives on my Acer Chromebooks -- not only to boot for installation, but also for actually running Linux off the USB 3.0 port (good speed, even though not using the internal SSD drives!). That being said, even though I did not have the problem described in thi...

Re: Linux install to flash drive?

On my Chromebook(s), I have activated 'Developer Mode' so that I can run Linux if I want to do so. Originally I would re-partition the internal SSD to make room for Linux, but now I have instead changed this to use ultra-compact USB thumbdrives like the Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0. I have changed vari...

Re: Working sound on Toshiba ChromeBook 2 SWANKY?

Some have claimed to have solved this -- can anyone verify? https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=226438 I have a Dell 11 Chromebook (N2840/Bay Trail), but in my case I just opted to install crouton -- rather than a separate Linux distro -- since I was primarily interested in just running a h...

Re: No sound on Acer R11 Chromebook

From everything I have read, Braswell-based Chromebooks like the Acer R11 don't yet have Linux support for the audio chip present -- not even the highly-tuned 'Gallium' linux distro -- at least not yet: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalliumOS/comments/62yt03/whats_going_on_with_cyan_acer_r11_audio_suppor...

Re: 18.1 Serena :- "Could not install the security updates" error

Same problem for me, on LMDE. What is even stranger to me is that I have multiple LMDE machine installs, and this behavior is only (so far) occurring on one machine. Also strange (for example) is that the update manager is telling me that Firefox '53.0.3~linuxmint1+betsy' wants to be installed -- ex...

Re: How to scroll a file while playing guitar? Is it even possible?

Primitive, but how about the top suggestion in this post: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/77642/auto-continuous-scrolling-of-man-output ...which uses the technique of piping a file (or output from a process) into a perl command e.g. cat myfile | perl -pe 'sleep 1' ...where '1' can be any nu...

Re: Mint in place of Chrome

Chromebooks are great! I have a few of them, as well as a Chromebox and now Chromestick (all used, from eBay) :) On my very first Chromebook, I installed a larger (128GB) SSD, and successfully did a 'dual-boot' install of my favorite Linux distro (Linux Mint 'LMDE'), and that worked great for me unt...

Re: Linux mint on USB for permanent use

The advise offered by the others is good and useful, and I don't have much I can add to it except for a few more thoughts... Whenever I get a new USB stick that I want to use for Linux, I now have a fairly standard 'recipe' of what to do with it... Create a 4-partition GPT 'hybrid' USB stick that ca...

Re: [SOLVED] Probably a dumb question about kernels...

I didn't have any security concerns, but some of my machines refused to run unless I had a (much) newer kernel -- and with Debian jessie backports, it is very easy -- my current kernel version is 4.9.

Re: Hauppauge TV tuner 950Q

Thanks. I'll check it out. Honestly, I'm about to give up on the tuner. Just too much wasted time. Hauppauge makes it very clear that they don't support linux, and don't intend to. I may just move an old TV into my work area. Well, I am sure that there are some Linux users out there that would love...

Re: Hauppauge TV tuner 950Q

Forgot to mention, many thanks for responding. Your response led me to learn about the "ls /dev" command and now at least I know that "video1" must be the 950Q. Yes! So I don't know if you still need assistance at this point, but my notes say this: OK, tried TVTime on my new netbook, and it mostly ...

Re: Hauppauge TV tuner 950Q

The few notes I have for myself on this device date back to 2010, so it is possibly/probably out-of-date. I don't have any special notes to myself re: missing firmware. Does a '/dev/videox' device show up when you plug it in?

Re: Linux Mint on Chromebook?

I am no expert, but I am running Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) in 'dual-boot' mode on some Acer Chromebooks -- both internally on a replaced 128gb SSD, and now recently also on a USB3 Sandisk mini thumbdrive. It is also possible to run a few flavors of Linux in parallel with a running ChromeOS se...

Re: Installing Linux Mint to a Pocket SSD

Sorry I cannot answer the specific question that you asked, but when you mentioned running Linux off of a USB3 SSD, I thought it wise to caution you: it doesn't appear that TRIM support is supported in this configuration. I, too, have Linux Mint (LMDE) installed off an SSD that I extracted from a Ch...
