Re: Linux is Not Windows

Nice article. As an alternative to the motorcycle vs car analogy I would prefer motorcycle vs bus. In a a bus people get on at various places and arrive at different places with the driver having root access. Windows assumes all home users want shopping, news, weather, movies whatever. The only plac...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

WHEN THERE'S A PROBLEM, DONT RUN AWAY BACK TO WINDOWS!!! Some people (including me) expect to be able to install linux, login and expect to be able to know how to use everything, just because they've been using a pc for years. What i didnt realised at 1st was that i had been using Windows all those...

Re: "Ignored" terms in forum search

I have the same problem when I was trying to search for windows 10. I got results windows 7, windows XP. all else. I tried the +prefix, single and double quotes, The search needs an AND/OR/XOR Boolean logical operations.

Secure boot after installing LM 17.1

After I succeeded installing a dual boot Win 8.1/Mint on 2 machines. I re-enabled secure boot to see what happens. Everything works fine! I am thinking secure boot just needs to be disabled for booting from the live USB version.

Re: Holy Hard-Drive, Batman! 6 Partitions on my laptop!

I might be wrong, it's been a while since I've used a Toshiba, but I think it's the F12 key that's used to access the boot menu, not the F11 key. Also, try holding it down before you press the power-on button. Yeah, you are correct! It is the F12 key. It still goes straight away to the Grub boot me...

Re: Holy Hard-Drive, Batman! 6 Partitions on my laptop!

Got it working! Thanx guys! I modified fstab to mount my main windows partition. Now I got the best of both worlds! So, LM 17.1 works great dual booting with a Toshiba Satellite C55D-A5208 laptop! Now, to get those pesky unmounted extra partitions off my drives manager desklet! Installing Grub on sd...

Re: Holy Hard-Drive, Batman! 6 Partitions on my laptop!

I think I already backed up the recovery partition on two 16GB USB stick drives. When I first bought the laptop (win8) and about a week ago I backed it up again to a second 16GB USB stick drive. I have a couple 1TB Toshiba canivo USB 3.0 drives to do general backups. I back up my virtual machines vm...

Thought of another question: Which of the partitions should I back up? I know I will back up sda4. That's a given.

Holy Hard-Drive, Batman! 6 Partitions on my laptop! <Solved

I am preparing my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C55-A5208) for a dual boot. Windows 8 was originally installed and I updated to 8.1. I want to install LM 17.1 cinnamon 64bit as the second OS. I am running the live USB gparted and found 6 Partitions ! 6 partitions! No kidding! WTH? Why 6? My other window...

/boot partition questions

Could somebody explain to me the /boot partition? What is it for ? When/why to use it? How big to allocate for it? What to format it (ext2, ext4, FAT16, FAT32 ... )? How is it different from the / partition (root)? I think it's optional just like a /home partition. Does it offer any advantages? Is i...

Re: How to partition drives (Already have 4 primary drives)?

srs5694 on Sun Jun 07, 2015 8:10 pm How can someone convert MBR disks to GPT disks painlessly? This is assuming UEFI exists and not Legacy BIOS. Use my GPT fdisk, which comes in the "gdisk" package in Mint. gdisk can convert disks almost instantaneously and with no loss of data in the partitions. T...

Re: dual boot using windows boot manager?

ajcardiac on Fri Jun 05, 2015 4:10 pm I have done that on a MBR disk with legacy boot. However the OP is talking about a GPT disk with UEFI boot. I do not believe your method works for UEFI boot. I am just finding that out now! GPT is a different animal. This maybe why I was getting that GRUB> CLI ...

Re: How to partition drives (Already have 4 primary drives)?

Mark Phelps : The limitation of 4 upper-level partitions in an MBR-formatted drive is NOT a Win7 limitation, it's a limitation of MBR-formatted drives. This raises another interesting question: MBR can only handle 4 partitions. How can someone convert MBR disks to GPT disks painlessly? This is assu...

How to "restart cinnamon"

I read a lot about how to fix desktop issues. Some times something would say "restart cinnamon." Not sure what it means but here is how to do it. It does not necessarily mean reboot. Move your mouse to a blank space on the desktop panel (mine is at the bottom). The desktop panel has all the tiny ico...

How I got rid of the "ubuntu" entry on UEFI boot menu!

After a botched dual boot install of mint on a pre-installed windows 8.1 machine (retail copy), I formatted and deleted the mint partition(s). However I was left with this pesky "ubuntu" entry on my UEFI boot order menu. I tried 3 different things. First, I will show the method that worked: Method 1...

Re: dual boot using windows boot manager?

This what I am in process of doing now. In Windows you can d/l and install EasyBCD and run it. It points the boot manager to a partition where GRUB2 lives. Make sure you don't install GRUB2 on SDA1. I am not finished yet. I still have issues, but at least it works to a point. There is a video on thi...

Re: Swap partition on an SSD

Great stuff. Derek_S & Pjotr. I read about the swapiness parameter. I think Nixie Pixel has a you tube video about that, among other things after installing. TRIM is what I thought might interfere with the SSD controller's garbage collection, but the Easy Linux tips project link told me just what I ...
