Re: mouse cursor becomes invisible after chaning users on cinnamon 18

I upgraded to Mint 18.2 and the problem has worsened: even with cntr-alt-esc I will not see the mouse cursor again after switching users. Annoying... aarrrgghhh! that doesnt sound good. All the problems with Mint 18 has caused me to jump over to Ubuntu Gnome 17.04, but that also exhibited a Intel v...

FWIW, I found the Epson experience to be very good for my XP-235

Installed drivers from the epson website (chose "Ubuntu" one) and printing and scanning are all working over Wifi.

Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

Old thread but I would like to add a remark (or two)... People with "zero tolerance" are not fit to use anything, let alone Linux. The sooner they learn that world or anything in it, is not perfect or revolving around them, the better for them and everybody else. As for the race problem in 18.1 Cin...

Re: Xfce: switching user causes frozen black screen

Hi Chrisonmint Unfortunately no progress yet. As also reported here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=173115 the cause could lie in the combination of MDM and some (how many?) nvidia cards. Would you confirm ? Actually these were my recent test: - Lenovo G500s + Nvidia Geforce + LM...

Re: Xfce: switching user causes frozen black screen

Hi Chrisonmint I forgot to mention my Mint version: I recently installed 18.1 (XFCE). Unfortunately none of the workaround you suggested work for me, except for hard reboot. I also suppose it's a MDM issue, regardless of desktop environment. I activated NDM debug logging in its preferences, but I d...

Re: Xfce: switching user causes frozen black screen

Hi twolf, were you able to switch to another TTY? If you can, then you likely need a different command to restart the MDM display manager - things changed with INIT vs upstart (I think).

Do some googling for it and report back.

@chrisonmint-"People come here for ease. They DL the latest version and they have zero tolerance the bugs. 100% agree. Thats the world I want to live in too, although I dont mind doing a bit of work. Bugs are ok if I can work around them or splat them! Windows isnt perfect either (sorry if this is ...

Re: What after April 2017 (end of support for Maya)?

Here's a summary of the distro's I've looked at in recent weeks for older machines... ... So meanwhile I'll stay with LM13 on this backup machine until I can find a newer distro. Perhaps I should add a virus/bot checker to help with security? wow, you have been busy. If you have hardware which need...

Re: Should I download/update Linux Firmware 1.157.8?

I take very seriously the warnings that I may break my system if I download anything from the Update Manager that's red (Level 5). That being said, something called Linux Firmware seems to be, at worst, benign and, at best, something I need. Should I download/update it? Its interesting to think abo...

Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

This thread reminds me of the age old arguments about Windows OS's. When XP came out, people were afraid and claimed Win98 was better. Then Win7 came out and everyone wanted to stay with XP. Same goes for Win10. If your old hardware can't handle the newer distros, then that is a valid argument. But...

Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

My 2 cents. Video playback has always been an issue for me on linux, either tearing or stuttering. I have really struggled to get a distro / kernel / desktop / driver / app combo which runs smoothly on all my video files. I have got 17.3 to as good as i can and am sticking with it. I have a spare ha...

Re: Understanding screen tearing

screen tearing is caused by your window manager ... use compiz or compton it has nothing to do with your monitor or how much RAM your graphics has or what drivers you use When i used LM 17 Xfce, the only way i could avoid tearing was to use compiz. Sadly it wasnt very stable and when compiz crashed...

Re: Xfce: switching user causes frozen black screen

I see this on Cinnamon Mint 17.3 and have for a while (since 17.1). I get the black screen with blinking cursor not every time i switch user, but probably once a week and cannot spot a pattern to it. You seem to be in the wrong TTY, so pressing control, alt and F8 brings you back to the login screen...

Re: LM17.3 Videos playback of files on network file share stutters

I just installed it from the repositories using sudo apt-get install smplayer smplayer-themes - not sure the themes are necessary but installed them just in case they may look better. Haven't tested it properly yet and will be down the pub shortly so, when i get there, I'll install it on my Acer an...

Re: LM17.3 Videos playback of files on network file share stutters

Is the playback OK on another machine, if that is an option to try? I wonder if the Raspberry Pi can't keep up with the data rate. I have had no issues with Totem in Cinnamon or Dragon Player in KDE, even the player on my lower spec machines running Xfce (can't remember which player Xfce uses at th...

Re: LM17.3 Videos playback of files on network file share stutters

First, the way apps are named in the start menus in Mint (and Ubuntu) is ridiculous. Yes, it simplifies things for new users, but obfuscates what is really going on. I did the same google searching and also found really old info which didnt seem to help. I have been using SMPlayer installed from a ...

LM17.3 Videos playback of files on network file share stutters

Playback of files on my local hard disk is fine and smooth, but when playing files from a Samba file share (raspberry pi running LibreElec) I see regular stutters every 5 seconds or so. I am assuming that this is because the Videos app doesnt have enough cache to keep playback running smoothly. How ...

is there any news about this topic? I have the same problem with the Whisker menu speed. Interestingly, there is no lag in Cinnamon menu. Re: mouse cursor becomes invisible after chaning users on cinnamon 18

Oh, and I dont know if this is related, but I have just done a user switch and now all the text in dialog boxes are garbled. The missing text when you switch users or come back from suspend appears to be an intel video bug: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/5607 it needs to be fixed upst...

Forget this, I am putting my LM17.3 install back in. Let me know if anyone gets a fix for this.
