terminal question

I have a questions about the command 'cd' in "Terminal". If I do cd Downloads, it goes to the Downloads folder. If I type in cd Ant Videos it tells me no such file or directory. Can 'cd' show dual named folders? If so what is the format? LS shows them. Did a man page for cd and it says none found. H...

how does one close a non-reponding folder?

I was transferring a 5meg file from a sub-folder to a micro-sdc card. After the transfer was completed I was able to close the sdc card and remove it from my computer. I tried to close my folder and saw a 'blank notification message' which did not respond to an exit via the mouse. Neither would the ...

Re: USB Question. Ham radio related

Just a further update. It appears the prolific USB-Serial cable causes issues on my system. I purchased a FTDI cable, installed the appropriate driver (from the mini-cd containing required drivers) and everything worked as expected.
Case closed!!!!!

Re: USB Question. Ham radio related

You are correct in your statement regarding wsjt-x. However if I plug something else in while wsjt-x is NOT active then that item I just plugged in will take TTYUSB0 (which is what I normally set wsjt-x to) and when I launch wsjt-x it does not 'see' the radio and I have to go into settings and selec...

USB Question. Ham radio related

I have been trying to get ARC8 software talking to a Uniden BT8 scanner under wine. The scanner uses a DB9 connector and all my equipment now has only USB ports. I have a Startech USB-DB9 cable that was used in the PK232 setup many years ago. It uses the Prolific PL2303 chip. Now if I do the followi...

Some messages when installing a ppa

Normally when installing a PPA in my mint 18.2 I have very few problems. I just tried to add a ppa for chirp and got some errors.' One thing I saw which does not seem right to me is the little 'squiggle before the $ as shown here "ve3sjv@Optiplex780 ~ $". I do not recall seeing this before. Is it no...

Re: confusion over 'sytem info' vs 'inxi -S and cat /etc/*-release

Did the upgrade and eventually the whole system 'stalled'. by that time I was totally ticked off so I deleted everything (all necessary and important folders and information was saved to a 2TB USB drive) and did a fresh install of Mint 18.2. Minor little problems, likely of my own causing but I see ...

Re: confusion over 'sytem info' vs 'inxi -S and cat /etc/*-release

Looked at update manager and found the upgrade available. Did the upgrade (18.1 then 18.2). Seems to be working and inxi -S/r and cat/etc/*-release show nothing regarding 17.3. They all show 18.2.Now to figure out how to get the taskbar to stop showing me multiples of applications when I open someth...

confusion over 'sytem info' vs 'inxi -S and cat /etc/*-release

I upgraded my mint 17.3 to 18. I was a relatively seamless upgrade with only some minor issues, one of which is solved and the other still pending. However my 'software sources' shows Linux mint 17.3 "Rosa". PPA's show 'ubuntu trusty main'. Doing a control panel --> hardware -->system info shows the...

install/update/upgrade of kodi/kodi-bin

The story so far ---- My Mint 17.3 system was working well with few issues. A second machine with a fresh install of Mint 18 with Kodi installed works well but it is a test machine only (I'm liable to put openSuse or Ultimate or some other distro to test out --strictly learning). I upgraded my prima...

Re: error on attempting to open up a folder

Thank you all for the assistance. Problem resolved. I rebooted into windows 10 and after an interminably long time for it to startup/load updates and run all whatever it does I looked at the drive (yes -- formatted NTFS) and didn't see '20 facebook.mp4'. I had another folder called music2, moved all...

Thanks Cosmo for your reply. Here is the result of your suggestion.

rm: cannot remove ‘/media/ve3sjv/Elements/Music/20 Facebook.mp4’: Input/output error

I'll keep working at it till I get rid of that particular file.
