Re: How best to clean up detritus from failed desktop sharing attempt

catweazel: Thank you for the command line how-to tutorial. You have not only given me a way to learn, but have also saved me from a lot of guessing....and wrong answers. What would be the companion dictionary style look-up? For example, you don't remember the command you need, but you do remember t...

Re: How best to clean up detritus from failed desktop sharing attempt

catweazel: Thanks for turning me on to the "history" command. I never knew it existed, and can remember many times I wished that I had just such a tool. Does it only list that which you have done with "apt-get"/command line in general, or will it list repository installs too? Does it go back for a ...

How best to clean up detritus from failed desktop sharing attempt

Hi All: Recently, I have attempted to get my machines to display and control each other's desktops. After about two weeks I have concluded that (that) is impossible - (except, possibly using the "cloud" based services, a non-starter for me). That's not the subject of this post, for I have given up o...

Re: lost+found File - removal fron ext. HD Solved

slinger1953 : Glad to have been of help. Just a little reminder to possibly help you head off a little frustration in the future: in Linux, drives use a different nomenclature, If a single drive, one partition, system, your " C " drive would be dev/sda1, meaning drive "a" partition 1. Your USB "dri...

Re: lost+found File - removal fron ext. HD

slinger1953:

To get rid of that file, you need to become root, the easiest way would be to right-click on another file and select "open as root". Navigate to "lost+found", click on "delete"...et voilà!

That should do it.

Re: Firefox new tab page "suggestions"

Hi Arch_Enemy & RIH: Yeah, the "hover" thing works...it will be interesting to see if any of those sites come back from the dead. I guess the trick to selecting permanent icons is you have to wait for the ones you want to appear so you can "pin" them. But hey, I got the "Forums" one! RIH: Yah, I ha...

Firefox new tab page "suggestions" SOLVED

Hi All: This is one of those stupid, nagging little irritants that I always forget to ask about. As we know, Firefox places icons of the sites we visit most on its browser's tab pages. It's a helpful feature: or so they say. Observation of how this feature operates makes me suspect that helpfulness ...

Re: Really weird IP / geolocation problem

Hi melltuga : I have a few thoughts...Since you are running Mint in a virtual machine there are many (more than normal) possibilities for "spoofing", some of which may be preset. There may be a built in VPN running within the VM, spoofing your location. Remember, Mint is running under Winderz. I wou...

Searching within one's own posts on this site SOLVED

Hi All:

Just a quick question about searches on this site: I want to search just my posts. I could find many other search options, but not that. It's got to be there.

Does anybody know how to search just within your own posts?

Thanks

Re: Will April update of Windows 10 destroy my dual booting Linux Mint 19.1?

Hi wallyUSA: Well, I don't know all that much about Winderz anymore, (I haven't used it in almost 20 years, except to wipe it from two "new" machines I got in (in) the last two weeks), but I think that it, like most software, has a mechanism by which you can disable automatic updates, (where's the u...

Re: Keyboard boot-up problem

jchelpau :

I don't think so, but I am not sure how I would find out, other than observing a non, or incomplete, boot-up. On that note, the machine looks as if it has booted up properly in all other respects; the desktop is present and the mouse can invoke programmes.

Programmes don't remember from which desktop they came

Hi All: I have been meaning to ask this question for years... It's really a speed-at which-you-can-work issue . Here's how it works: let's say you want your browser on desktop 2, a word processor of desktop 3, terminal on desktop 4 and e-mail on desktop 5. You go to desktop 2 and click on your brows...

Keyboard boot-up problem

Hi All: A friend just gave me another computer (which I have been working on for the last couple of weeks). It's a good machine: however with the keyboard being a piece of junk, (a flat-key, black with grey numbering job having poor visual ergonomics and worse tactile feedback) I decided to ditch it...

How is IP leaked?

Hi All: As we all know, a VPN is a necessity today, yet, there are ways your real IP can get "leaked". Efforts to prevent this would seem to me to be more effective if I/we knew just how it is accomplished. Do they query your router? Or perhaps your modem? Are there registers within your machine (li...
