It might be of use to you to know that the Linux kernel in the official Debian backports is now at version 4.1; you may have less issues with official backports than with third party builds. Maybe, this isn't ALWAYS the case...

Linux kernel 4.1 is in jesssie-backports; if I was going to update my kernel I would surely feel more confident running something from the official Debian backports.

You can install backports of libreoffice to jessie from stretch from http://backports.debian.org/ Obviously you'll only get the versions of libreoffice that have made their way from sid into stretch; currently in jessie-backports there is version 4.4.5. Libreoffice 5 will eventually make it's way in...

I actually found that I had to set "org.cinnamon.desktop.session screensaver-uses-logind" to TRUE to properly suspend on laptop lid close and from the power button pop-up menu.
