Re: New to this forum but not to LInux

Welcome Jani!

I have the HP EliteBook 8460p, but haven't seen your 8640p. Are there any differences?

Mine also has a fingerprint reader, but I purposely haven't tried to get it working.

Good luck!

Re: Have I been doing updates wrong all these years?

... OK, phew! Now I need to decide which tradeoff I prefer: slightly shorter battery life in Mint, but less disruptive updates? Or, slightly longer battery life in Fedora, but more distracting updates? :? Choices, choices! Recently, I tried Manjaro and it's a nice distro with rolling releases. Good...

Re: Full usb drive install that will work on anything

I have a SanDisk 64 GB USB 3.0 flash drive that has a full install. It was installed as Legacy and has a / and /home partition. I don't use it often, so I can't speak about durability. I have booted it from a Dell and Gateway desktop and from an HP laptop. It runs on all three without a problem. Unf...

Re: Have I been doing updates wrong all these years?

To my knowledge, you've been updating correctly. Like you, I don't reboot unless it's a kernel update or a security update.

Re: Remmina Remote Desktop Client

Hi smurphos,

Thanks for the link. There were a couple of solutions so I'm not sure which.

Should I set up vino or x11vnc?

Re: Remmina Remote Desktop Client

Not sure about this, but I seem to recall reading that Mint 19 no longer includes a VNC server by default. If that is true, the simple fix would be to install one. Thanks for the reply. Forgot to mention that the desktop can connect to the laptop. So, this begs the question: why can the desktop con...

Remmina Remote Desktop Client

Hello all, To preface, I set up my partner's desktop with Mint 19 Xfce. He had (and still does have on a separate disk) 18.3 Cinnamon. I installed Remmina a few weeks ago and was able to connect easily to the desktop (18.3 Cinnamon) from my laptop (19 Xfce). I used the VNC option by typing in the de...

looker1, welcome to the forums.

Have you tried a different web browser to see if the same thing happens?

You can get Chromium (very similar to Chrome) from the Software Manager.

Re: Thoughts And Opinions on Aptik

Aptik is one of two programs I use for backing up and restoring. I like a backup of the backup. Aptik is great for doing a complete backing up and restoring of the same version (18.3 to 18.3). I'm upgrading my desktop from 18.3 Cinnamon to 19 Xfce. I'm using Aptik only for a listing of what was back...

Re: Keeping software on your OS..

I have what may be a bad habit.. I keep software on mint. What I mean is, I have 3 word processors, 3 web browsers, and other software I hardly use. Always annoys me when space is taken up by a Firefox update when I never use it. However, I am paranoid that one day I'll quickly need the internet, a...

It was simple enough to set up, it just does not work "out of the box" There is a thread that I started asking about it. If you can find that, you'll see some very useful answers there.
I will! Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot read file permissions of shortcuts created on desktop

The only issue I foresee with using xfce is that file sharing is a little more convoluted than in Cinnamon. I had to set xfce up on a small lappy that is my spare and file sharing does not work "out of the box" on that. Thanks for that advice. I've never had good luck with file sharing in either DE.

Re: dpkg is broken

You don't need to type it in at all.

If you click on the "SELECT ALL" that's above the code someone give you, you can then right-click on it and select copy.

Then in Terminal, right-click and paste.

Code: Select all

find /home/jim/Desktop -type f -print0 | xargs -0 chmod 744
As I told gm10, I'm going to install Xfce. Seeing permissions works from properties and the links open the URLs.

Thanks!

Re: Cannot read file permissions of shortcuts created on desktop

I then proceeded to drag the URL onto the desktop. When I clicked on the newly-created shortcut, it opened Linux Mint page, which it should. Then I checked permissions by right-clicking and choosing Properties. Again, permissions can't be determined. I already explained this to you a few months ago...

Re: Cannot read file permissions of shortcuts created on desktop

Well, I just did a fresh install of 19 on the desktop. The first thing I did was to open Firefox. In a fresh install, that opens the Linux Mint page. I then proceeded to drag the URL onto the desktop. When I clicked on the newly-created shortcut, it opened Linux Mint page, which it should. Then I ch...

Re: Cannot read file permissions of shortcuts created on desktop

I have a heap of those sorts of launchers that do that on a first run after installing a new OS, but once I double click on them and Linux tells me that the permissions are suspect, if I tell it to allow them, I never have the trouble again with that launcher on that computer. If you have hundreds ...
