Re: Eterneal hard drive remain on when i shut down

You may want to check your BIOS setting to see if there's an option to keep USB powered even when turned off.

BTW, iI noticed your info:

Code: Select all

CPU: Dual core Intel Celeron N3350 (-MCP-) cache: 1024 KB
...
clock speeds: max: 2400 MHz 1: 2137 MHz 2: 2137 MHz 3: 2342 MHz
Your CPU is dual core with dual threads so it should be showing 4, not three

Re: Access one computer from another in home network

We aren't using netbios. I know it's not literally NETBIOS any more; used it as interchangable with "Windows networking" or more specifically, that which Windows networking grew from. What is "important" here is that Samba is, essentially, a silly choice for networking two Linux machines. And that ...

Re: Access one computer from another in home network

Not an expert on firewalls I'm afraid but whatever you had in place made this way more difficult to diagnose. In case it helps, as far as firewalling goes, all I do is allow 445/tcp in/out from/to the local network on every machine. I don't allow guest/anonymous access, so I can't comment on that i...

Firewall is no problem. I can take care of that. It's only the creating and moving files that I would need.

Thanks so much altair4!

Re: Access one computer from another in home network

This is nothing personal but you are driving me nuts! This is good: Yes, I had the credentials as guest=no. I fixed both computers' shared folders. I can now access each other's shared folders. This is bad: Now, I can't create or move files to and from each computer. Did you mean "Now, I can create...

Re: Access one computer from another in home network

I looked into NFS and it's complicated. NFS is also by the way exceedingly easy to set up An attempt to explain how you should probably proceed, not sure if it is complete : To share using NFS you need to install the nfs server: ( not entirely sure if this is necessary for you ) sudo apt-get update ...

I've decided that I don't want to create user jerry and user jim on both computers, since that is necessary for ssh to work.

I keep getting the "Failed to open... Failed to retreive share list from server: No route to host." When you try to do it from Browse Network in thunar or when you try it from the terminal? Help us to help you.

Run the following command from Terminal, then copy and paste the result in between

tags. It's the </> button above where you type a message.
