Re: Linux Mint 21.3

I've been using Mint Xfce for years. It's the best Xfce version, IMHO. It's well-organized compared to the others. It's rock solid and played well with all my available hardware resources. Haven't experienced any crash for years. Yeah, believe it or not. I really have no idea why anyone would prefer...

Re: Non-Mint: MX Linux or Pop!_OS?

Both MX21 xfce and Mint21 xfce use the ctrl button to zoom with the scroll wheel and the +- buttons The scroll wheel (with any other key) just cycles the 2 default workspaces.) I've gone over this before and I'm not going to rack my brain again trying to figure it out. It was disabled. (I'd appreci...

Re: Really impressed with Debian 12!

The trouble with adding stuff is that Xfce has become bloated to the point that it's not actually a lightweight DE anymore. That's why Xfce became popular. It was light yet didn't need too much config by editing files. Now it's no lighter than Mate really. I'd take Mate over Xfce any day now. Mate ...

Re: Really impressed with Debian 12!

Debian has a larger user base than Mint and they're one of the most knowledgeable bunch of users around. I think they're probably giving them what they want. That doesn't mean much to me. I go for what I want. Not what some people decide for me. If you are a software developer, of course you want a...

Re: Really impressed with Debian 12!

Too bad their Xfce flavor is stripped to a basic version it's almost unrecognizable. Features I value in the original Xfce are non existent. Don't know why software developers do this, totally unmindful of long-time Xfce fans. They should be adding, instead of subtracting. Or at least, suggest bette...

Re: The Future direction of Linux

Most important factor for user while choosing a distribution is not its features but its infrastructure and maintenance policy. Spot on. Which is why I love the Ubuntu LTS codebase of Mint. I really never understood this apprehension from certain users about Mint's future. As well as this...

Re: Why do so many people recommend Arch over Mint?

(This may not be relevant, but you can ignore it if you want.) You have to recall that all OSes came from humble beginnings. They all started out with meager hardware resources and the way they develop back then correlates to what kind of hardware was available. The strange part is, that kind of min...

Re: When Is Release Date Of 21.2 ?

Me I don't have to wait. I allocate 2 partitions for my Mint Xfce systems. And they are part of a multi-boot configuration, which includes either Win10 or 11. I don't do virtual machine setups. I'd prefer it live and must co-exist with other OSes. So when there's a new release, I simply delete one o...

Re: Recommendations Request: Graphics Tablets

Many inexpensive graphics tablet work on Linux without even installing any driver. EXCEPT the configuration dialog is missing unlike in Windows such as setting up only a portion of the tablet area, customizing the buttons ( if it has some), absolute, relative, etc. But you most likely don't need the...

Re: Firefox download update is always taking forever....

Try selecting other mirror servers in Software Sources. I'll do that for the very next update and see what happens. I usually just change the Base (jammy) and leave the Main (vera) untouched. What I'm wondering about is why only Firefox when the rest in the list updates normally. And the size is on...

Re: 4 Years On Linux - Annual Update!

What I'm averse to is this minimalistic theme they have started promoting for years. Sorry, I'm just not into this minimalism thing. It's like telling me to go back to textual interface maximizing the use of a keyboard, wade through a series of menus, when almost everything now is about point and c...

Re: 4 Years On Linux - Annual Update!

This notion that one distro is more secure than another is rubbish. Whether it's rubbish or not they have to believe it's true to give them sense of security, real or imagined. Like I mentioned, it's a blanket statement that can never be proven. Which just tells me there's some elitistic behavior g...

Re: 4 Years On Linux - Annual Update!

It's been rock solid, and I'm not going to say it's the most secure like Debian users claim theirs is. That to me is a blanket statement that can't be proven and which I'll never buy. On any flavor, Its as secure as you wish to make it. Security comes in many forms. No doubt many users get easily i...

Re: 4 Years On Linux - Annual Update!

There are tens and tens of Linux distros to choose from. If you're a beginner you'll virtually have zero clue which one to choose. You then rely on google searches. There you find sites that say, "Top 10 distros for beginners; Best 5 distros for Windows users," etc. I suspect this is one r...

Don't know what the big deal is about this Flatpak. I use whatever works like appimages, or whatever is available in the software center. If I want the latest stable version of the software, I'll to go their site and use whatever is recommended on that site.

Re: Vera is here! love it? not?

As a windows used since 1991, I'm one of those that detest changes that does nothing more than hide useful stuff behind more and more menus. A good OS does not get into the way of the user  That seemed to be the theme marketing people, who should never get involved in usability design, wan...

What may be "modern" to you may not be so for others. Which is fine as we all have our own unique individual preferences and see things differently. The solution for these developers if they want to attract millions of users with varying tastes is to offer every conceivable option possible...

Re: Whats happened to XFCE

I used to be a KDE guy. I went back to Kubuntu when Mint KDE was scrapped. Unfortunately, things that used to work no longer work for me. Couldn't even get it past the installation stage. Learned that others were experiencing the same issues. Developers were hard at work and bugs were getting fixed....

Re: Whats happened to XFCE

Users with very old PCs will never run out of Linux distros to choose from. Like I mentioned, many developers will probably be in this category for many years to come. It's what makes them happy and it gives them feeling of self-importance and accomplishment. I would just rather see them focus on mo...
