Re: Slower responses on 17.3 vs 17.2

I too noticed some lag and erratic behaviour in post 17.1-mate releases. My machines are older dual-core systems with 2 or 4gb. I did some research on Window Managers and discovered there are options and what you choose impacts performance. So I did this: Control Center > Desktop Settings > Windows ...

Re: My SSID is broadcast twice (as secured and unscecured)

* The mystery MAC address I mentioned in my original post was from the Attached Devices list provided by Netgear routerlogin.net. Is that necessarily the MAC address of the mystery AP, or could that be a separate device, i.e., someone logged in via the unsecured mystery AP before I changed the name...

Re: My SSID is broadcast twice (as secured and unscecured)

Interesting indeed! Based on what you've presented, I'd be suspecting that someone nearby has named their SSID the same as yours, either by accident or with intentions to attempt to get your devices to connect to their router for nefarious purposes. It sounds like you've mostly covered this, but jus...

Re: memory usage

Why people are so concerned about the amount of memory used, or how much a processor is doing? Monitoring memory and CPU utilization is usefull for optimizing performance. Especially on low-spec hardware or a VM where resources might be limited. When a system runs low on memory, it starts using the...

Re: Explain why /home should be on a separate partition

Your /home can be wherever you want it. By placing it in it's own partition or hard disk, it makes backup and system reinstalls easier. For example, I have a 40gb SSD exclusively for my operating system and swap partitions. I have a 750GB HDD for /home. When I want to reinstall the OS I just put the...

Re: memory usage

My host system (Mint Mate 17.0) is currently using 784MB with no apps running. After a reboot it dropped to 409MB. In search of lightweight options for use in VirtualBox, I recently tested about a dozen mostly debian based distros using the Mate, Xfce and LXDE desktops. They used anywhere from 186MB...

Re: Recommend a good security cam program for linux

Hi Rich, My findings regarding remote off-site monitoring of a Swann DVR system: Zoneminder was the only native Linux app I've found but haven't been able to get it working. I don't think it qualifies as being easy to setup ... or even moderately easy. Running the SwannView Windows app via Wine work...

Re: Infected......???

Greetings Stix, I suspect you may be dealing with a few separate issues here. Regarding rkhunter & chkrootkit: it's fairly common to get a false positive for the suckit rootkit, particularly when using chkrootkit. Also, rkhunter depends on certain utilities being present. I created a quick-start gui...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 not stable

Greetings All, I've been using Mint since version 13. I was running 17 since it was released then updated to 17.1 shortly after it came out in hopes of clearing up a few minor annoyances such as fonts on desktop icons going to black when they should be white. Then I updated to 17.2 via a clean wipe/...

Re: Strange mouse cursor

My thoughts are to try these one at a time: 1. enter 'Control Panel' then 'Windows' and de-select 'Enable software compositing window manager'. 2. enter 'Control Panel' then 'Compiz' and deactivate some or all options. Compiz provides visual effects for the desktop. It's not required and may cause i...

Re: Linux Mint on HP4540s

If there is going to be a problem, you will most likely find it running a live-boot. Different video drivers or settings may make a difference as noted in the link to the thread buzzsaw provided. And hopefully that issue has indeed been fixed. I found this site with good pics of the internals of you...

Re: Linux Mint on HP4540s

Hi Wajih, In this situation, what I'd probably do is: 1. Backup any data you care about. 2. Download the version containing the desktop environment you like, looks like yours will support the 64-bit version. I'm partial to the Mate desktop, that's just a preference not a requirement. 3. Create a boo...

Ideally, use a network card that has native Linux support and doesn't need ndiswrapper. Things just go smoother when you do.

Re: comptia wireless+?

Thanks Excollier, I suspected there was quite a bit on wireless in the Network+. I'm taking the CompTIA Network+ prep course through Gale Courses / Cengage and the instructor informed me I was off topic in asking questions about Wi-Fi as there isn't much about it on the exam. Suffice to say it...

Re: comptia wireless+?

Hi Linman, They were considering that cert but cancelled the plans. Looks like the closest thing in is a CompTIA Mobility+ cert that covers mobile devices and Wi-Fi. I took a Network+ prep class, it didn't get too deep into WiFi though. Are you seeking a certification or just wanting to learn? If it...
