Re: Installation finishes, but reboot not working!

It doesn't bother me too much as I know what to do about it. But, it is embarassing when demonstrating Linux Mint to others, or if I give them a DVD. They don't know what to do about it, and it turns them off on Linux Mint before they even get into trying it out. Considering how long the glitch has ...

Installation finishes, but reboot not working!

I have tried Linux Mint on 7 different computers (mostly Dell, desktops & laptops). When installation completes, computer will not reboot without forcing me to hold power button to shutdown and restart machine. This is not a new problem with Linux Mint 17 or LMDE. It is annoying and embarrasing ...

Re: Drop LMDE or turn it over to a community group!

I would happily come back if LMDE was consistently maintained, and stable enough to use on my client's machines. I can't see that happening if it is based on debian testing instead of debian stable. I play with Debian Jessie on occasion, and it is still too unreliable to use for everyday work. If Li...

Drop LMDE or turn it over to a community group!

Since Linux Mint is unable or unwilling to keep LMDE up-to-date, perhaps they should just drop it altogether or turn it over to a community to maintain. I have long since moved on to Debian Wheezy with the Mate 1.6 desktop installed. Works fine, no need to wait anymore for Linux Mint to release new ...

Re: Why I have given up on LMDE

I got tired of every update pack causing some hardware not to function anymore. I am also not a huge fan of of the mint x or mint z themes, prefer the default cinnamon and mate themes. I found a good soultion with Debian Wheezy with LightDM and Mate 1.6 installed. Hardware all works, and themes are ...

Re: LMDE package freshness

I solved the problem with my ATI HD 4200 video gpu and HP Photosmart 3140 printer by switching the lmde sources to Debian Wheezy while I wait and wait and wait for LMDE to at least catch up with Debian Wheezy in it's repos. Why are LMDE users the last in line to get updates while all other editions ...

Re: LMDE Update Pack 7 - when?

Eventually it will be, but at the moment LMDE latest is behind Wheezy. Installing Mate 1.6 while possible is a bit of bother, and doesn't work well with LMDE modifications made to Mate 1.4 and Debian. Tried it already with little success or satisfaction.

Re: LMDE Update Pack 7 - when?

Wish I could wait that long, had to switch some sources to Debian Wheezy in order to get my printer driver installed. Also, why can't we have more theme choices than Mint-x and Mint-z by default. I am sure someone loves the metal look with no contrast, but with my bifocals it is just plain hard to r...

Re: GnuCash

You can probably find the .deb packages at the www.debian.org website under unstable or experimental package lists. WARNING! Installing these packages may have dependencies that can't be met, and that can interfere with the operation of other parts of LMDE. Definitely back up your home folder before...

Re: Muting audio doesn't work properly

Another solution is to install alsamixer-gui, then you can unmute the sound easily whenever you want. Or someone could just fix the damn sound problem permanently.

Re: LMDE UP6 ISOs?

Ahh, wouldn't it be nice if all you had to do was keep doing the updates, and everything kept working as it should. In real life, that doesn't happen. Each update pack brings new problems to sort out, and usually requires a complete new install to get everything working again. Sometimes 2 or 3 insta...

Re: Web Page Editor

While it may seem scary, in the long run hand-coding web pages gives you more control and freedom to be creative. The tools you need are readily available in LMDE: gedit/pluma, gFTP and Gimp. I have been using them for years with great success. I have created a series of modules that can be used tog...

Re: Please, something that just works!

If I purchased a computer with Linux preinstalled, that would only be good until the next round of updates is released. Then my hardware may no longer be supported, new equipment I purchase such as printers may not be supported, etc. Also, the selection of computers available with Linux is pretty l...

Re: Please, something that just works!

You are right!!! In retrospect, I have never found another OS that works perfectly out of the box. This goes all the way back to my first computer, a TI 99/4. The Commodore 128, IBM compatibles with DOS, and machines with successive versions of Windows starting with Windows 3.1 all had their frustra...

Re: Please, something that just works!

I am glad to hear some people have no issues using Linux. I have used Lycoris, Linspire, Freespire, Xandros, Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, Mageia, SolusOS and numerous other distributions on a dozen or more machines. They all have their good points, but sooner or later, the fatal flaw appears ...

Please, something that just works!

I have tried a lot of linux distributions over the last few years, and am still looking for one that just works out of the box. By that, I mean no command line fixes, updates, etc. with support for my hardware and applications I want to use. My current frustration is with Linux Mint where the Linux ...

The sooner the better, downloading and installing 1400+ packages takes a long time for each new install I do.

Re: Is their going to be a LMDE 14?

I wonder what hardware on my system will no longer be supported this time, and will there be another 1300+ updates to install not to mention another mint-debian-meta-mate package? Common sense would tell you to have the respin ready before you release UP6 as well as legacy drivers for existing hardw...
