Re: Did I Lose my root user?

OK, to enter that command "sudo passwd root" I had to first enter "sudo su" to change myself to a super user (get the "#" on my prompt in place of the "$"). Then I entered the "sudo passwd root" command and was able to give the root user a password. Out of habit on my single user computer, I use the...

Re: Did I Lose my root user?

I was using only "su" (without the quotes). If I use sudo with a command following the sudo, that still works and it will take my user's password. It says it is the "[sudo] password for jack:" and then prints the result of the command. Like this for the ls command: jack@jack-T520:~$ sudo ls [sudo] p...

Did I Lose my root user?

I'm running 64-bit Mint on a Lenovo T520, it started back in 2017 or so with Linux Mint 18.1 and has since the original install has been upgraded a number of times and is now running on 19.3 Tricia. I don't use the terminal very often and this laptop is my primary computer. I have used the su and ro...

Re: Recommendations for a ftp app

Thanks for the replies, looks like we are closing in on a solution or what I need to do next to explore this.

I'm going to let this thread run for another day or so and then I give it another try. And it looks like Filezilla can work after all.

Recommendations for a ftp app

I'm running 64-bit Mint 19.3 on a Lenovo T520 laptop and want to add an application to that for making ftp uploads. I tried Filezilla but it did not work and I noticed that it describes itself as good only for the later versions of Windows and Macs. So I uninstalled that and am looking for a suggest...

Re: how to copy files off a existing linux mint partition from a live usb

From Windows, like with Windows Explorer, it will not show you the Linux partitions or files. Linux uses ext4 partitions and Windows uses ntfs. If you make a CD or USB stick you can use the gparted program to make a copy of the Linux partition to a USB connected hard drive or USB stick. And when you...

Re: [SOLVED] List of all applications...

The depth of your knowledge is inspiring Flemur!

I've spent the last hour trying to learn more about scripts and running scripts.

Is the script you call "W" in a text file named W.txt?

I have so much to learn that I feel like Neanderthal man tying to communicate with a modern genius!

Re: List of all applications...

That's a good one!

I don't know why I can't find some of these things...

I googled the question and got this one that is a good choice too:

Code: Select all

jack@jack-T520:~$ dpkg -l
I'll bet I can send that list to a text file too. Or even just copy it and paste it into one.

Thanks again!

Re: How to Overhaul or Replace Grub setup?

Congratulations and well done. By the way, if you run ls /usr/lib/grub now, I'm willing to wager a bright shiny nickel you'll get x86_64 . Which is further evidence that what went wrong the first time is that, for reasons I can't spot, grub was installed for BIOS/legacy the first time around. Where...

Re: How to Overhaul or Replace Grub setup?

We have had a major breakthrough! I decided to try a new install from the ground up. it went as follows: 1 - This morning I took a spare hard drive and deleted everything from it. Then I ran the Windows 7 Ultimate install DVD and it installed that OK. 2 - Then I ran gparted from a CD and resized the...

Re: How to Overhaul or Replace Grub setup?

If I look at the filesystem as root from my home folder (/Home/jack) and enter that command I get this: jack@jack-SL510:~$ ls /usr/lib/grub grub-mkconfig_lib i386-pc and if I go to the root folder and enter that command I get this: jack@jack-SL510:~$ cd / jack@jack-SL510:/$ ls /usr/lib/grub grub-mkc...

Re: How to Overhaul or Replace Grub setup?

I read this to say you are able to boot into Mint, albeit only from Super Grub 2. Is that correct? That's correct, after I boot from the Grub 2 CD and have it show me the list of operating systems, I can cursor up or down to highlight either the "Windows Boot Manager (on sda1)" entry or the "Linux ...

[SOLVED] How to Overhaul or Replace Grub setup?

I think I need something like a new start or fresh start on my grub related files and configuration. I have a new hard drive and I installed Windows 7 Ultimate (W7U) and then Mint 19.3 with a USB boot stick. Those were both working fine and when I booted I got a menu offering me a choice of the two ...

Re: Choosing Partition types - GPT or MBR?

Wow! Thanks for the detailed reply and suggestions. I'll probably give that a try. I have an external cased drive that has a 3TB Hitachi 3.5" SATA drive in it and that was where I was going to back up my laptop's drive to. But I just noticed that even though the drive is marked at a 3TB drive it onl...

Looking at your more info links they both show it being done from Windows machine using the Disk Management app. Part of my problem is that I'm trying to do it from Linux because I don't have Windows installed yet. Choosing Partition types - GPT or MBR?

I have been running Mint 19 and Windows 7 from dual boot hard drive for a couple of years. The dual boot is controlled by grub. The display on the Lenovo SL510 laptop recently failed and I moved the hard drive to a Lenovo T520 laptop. It booted and the Mint install worked OK but the W7 install had s...
