Ok, I'm going to try and use Gparted later on today. Will this partitioning scheme work on my 11.24GB HD? /dev/hda1 ext3 / 5GB /dev/hda2 extended 525.56 MiB /dev/hda3 home 5GB /dev/hda5 linux-swap 525.56 MiB Not sure if this will add up to 11.24GB. Is there anything else I need? I'll worry about mov...

A "normal" user does not have the rights to copy/move something to the usr folder. I don't know your program but there should be an option in the menus for importing a spell checker dictionary. If not you'll have to sudo when you copy, but only do that if there is no import option No, there isn't. ...

AbiWord spell check issue

I tried to extract "aspell5-en-6.0-0" to the dictionary folder under AbiSuite 2.0 directory in my usr folder, but it will only let me extract to "/tmp/aspell5-en-6.0.0t", the result being the program won't read the dictionary when it's placed there. Spell Checker (F7) is still greyed out. Anybody ha...

use sudo you could extract the file with a sudo and that would put all the contents there. cd /usr/share/AbiSuite-2.4/dictionary sudo tar -xvf /path/filename.tar or change the directory permissions and all subdirectories of AbiSuite. (not a good security practice.) sudo chmod -R 777 /usr/share/AbiS...

How do I get this file permission changed?

How do I get full ownership for the following file?

usr/share/AbiSuite-2.4/dictionary

I need to extract an AbiWord dictionary to that folder and it says I don't have permission to do so.

Thanks

You could try to boot with a live CD and change the partitions from there? How would that work? http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-do-i-resize-windows-partition-with-open-source-software.html http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/04/25/1917228 http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page Thanks. Well it's not letting me unmount hda1 in order to let me resize it. Even after I do the swapoff in hda5. Did you boot the system from the harddisks? Well .. obviously the disks are in use then and you can't do this while they are in use.    You could try to boot with a live C...

It'll let me resize hda3 and hda5 but not hda1. What am I doing wrong?

Looking for partition help

After blowing Windows clean off this machine, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I should partition my 11.24 GB HD So far I have: /dev/hda1 ext3 / 10.72GB (size) 1.67 (used) 9.05GIB boot /dev/hda2 extended 525.56 MiB /dev/hda5 linux-swap 525.56 MiB I've read that I need a /home pa...

Moving a redundant thread is good work. What puts me off is seeing that the "moderation" often includes a petty insult. ------ Agree. I've been in forums where that's happened and if it's too heavy handed or condescending, then people usually vote with their feet and just move somewhere else. Besid...

Oops,

I should clarify myself by saying that I formated C:/ under FDISK using FAT32, but when it came time to go through the Linux installer, I selected the ext3 format in partitioning. So technically, it's running under ext3 and not FAT32.

I mispoke. Again, sorry.

I just FDISKed the whole C:/ and reinstalled Gnome in one new primary, formatted FAT32 partition. You installed Linux onto a FAT32 partition? Surely any nervousness about GParted became irrelevant once you decided to blow your partitions to smithereens anyway! Much can be learned from inconsequenti...

Tell ya what I did, telic. Since I really didn't have anything saved in my Gnome partition that I wanted to keep, I just FDISKed the whole C:/ and reinstalled Gnome in one new primary, formatted FAT32 partition. However I am going to need to know how to do backups when I start putting .jpgs, mp3s, d...

I believe that your assessment is a valid alternative to my pattern behavior, and I'd trust Bianca to do no harm in such an approach. Go for it**. (Though do lay full blame on Clem for any subsequent tragedy.) ;-) **Note that your suggested way would leave hda1 in a "faulty" (one unbootable conditi...

I've been using a HDD that has Windows (hda1), swap (hda2), and two ext3 partitions (hda3 and hda4). GNOME Bianca has remained on hda4 while I've (re)installed numerous distros on hda3. Each new install modified the GRUB boot manager for the change on hda3, while leaving Windows and Bianca intact a...

Time to blow Windows away!

I'd like to go ahead and take the plunge and do away with Windows on this machine. I've already made a Ghost image of it should anything happen. I already have Linux Mint Bianca (Gnome version) mounted (hda2) and I'd like to use the NTFS partition (hda1) to install Bianca KDE edition. I have an .ISO...

Mouse problem - Never saw this before

Well now I've run into something weird that I've never seen on any computer before. After I downloaded Wine and went to install it, the mouse pointer over the grey Wine GUI box started distorting when the mouse pointer hovered over it. The mouse pointer changes into a video distorted square patch. A...
