VPN on or with a Draytek Router

Hi, i’ve got a bit of a problem with my new Draytek 2762ac Router. Nice kit though. I have a VPN (PIA) separately on all equipment within the home network. Incl on the smart phone. It works but I wanted to start the SSL VPN service, also debating whether to install the VPN that comes with the router...

Re: Password forgot for sda5_crypt. Unable to login [SOLVED]

Hopefully you had made backups! I have re-installed Linux quite a few times due to mostly pressing the wrong keys at the wrong time. I back-up key passwords on USB. All programs are backed up on a NAS (USB drive attached to router). Only attached when backing up. So far I must say it has been brilli...

Re: Looking forward to setup a VPN service on Linux mint

An interesting question really - obviously OpenVPN is used widely. Also by companies supplying VPN software. The main thing to remember a free VPN is not advisable. Why? Well why do you want a VPN in the first place? Free VPN companies have to make some money, up to you to figure out how. So, use a c...

Re: Suggestions for Mounting my Personal CLoud NAS

I do not class myself as an expert but I solved this as follows: My NAS is a simple 1Tb USB drive attached to the router. The easy way to mount this is to alter the fstab file. (gedit /ext/fstab) and include the following line: //192.168.1.254/usb1 /media/data cifs rw,credentials=/home/name_of_user/...

SOLVED Re: Lost contact with Router attached USB

Sorry people, after some more late evening work the router now accepts a new user name. So by changing 'admin' to a new username the stuff works again. I use a credentials file so it was easy to change it (when you finally think of it). BTW I am still not sure why we have to put in the fstab line 'v...

Lost contact with Router attached USB

After hundreds of hours trawling through the many forums, with lots of well-meant but useless information I wonder whether Mint updates are at fault? I have run a router (BT5) with attached 1Tb USB drive for well over a year. I use it to backup all the files via fwbackups. But suddenly it stopped wo...

Dual Boot Install failure

Hi, I tried to install Mint 18.2 on a Windows 10 laptop. Having looked at all the hundreds of advice and made the usb’s (1- Linux, and 1 recovery for windows) I installed from the linux usb. The installation hung on the grub2 install. Having considered all the problems I now want to run Mint on a vi...

Re: Installer requires root privileges

How to install Xampp on Linux Mint – (mine is 18.2 but it should not make much of a difference). Goto apachefriends (typing apachefriends in your browser will do) Select Download XAMPP. Select XAMPP for Linux and choose the first selection (5.6.30) They are however 64 bit. Assuming your set-up is 64...

Re: kickoff: can't start app as root & some launchers missing

Sounds a bit too complicated to me? The manager should start and is part of the LAMPP directory unless you have installed it somewhere else. I wouldn't do that. However, there is another way and use a small file called xampp.desktop. Copy the following and save it to the desktop. [Desktop Entry] Enc...

XAMPP Control Panel

There is much outdated advice on the web concerning XAMPP. In particular because a lot of it is for Windows and Ubuntu. Linux Mint has different locations where files are put. It took me a few minutes to trace bits but if you want a desktop icon on the Mint desktop use the following: The adapted fil...

Re: [Solved] What is tracking us in Mint and why?

You can always be tracked, even moving to an uninhabited island! The sharks will. It is the beginning of the complete digital age. Soon we will all have an embedded chip in our arms. But you can always move the goalposts to make it difficult. Use VM and keep changing. I use 5 different set-ups and c...

Re: Installing Tor browser

I am surprised no-one mentioned that it would be better NOT to install Tor on your computer but run it from a bootable usb-stick. I run Tails (a browser with Tor) and that works very well, however it is slow. This is for the paranoid of course. I was reading an article recently stating that most if ...

Re: Bleachbit

I have to agree with minster. I have used Bleachbit for well over a year now without problems. I operate it as root and just select those items needed to be deleted using the gui. Especially rotated logs. I know I could also set up a rotating system but this is easier. It's like everything else be p...

Re: backup files

I am surprised no-one seems to use fwbackups - download the bz2 file and open with the Archive Manager or use tar and configure plus make file. fwbackups completely backs up my two computers every week and dumps these on a 1Tb usb drive acting as a nas. (attached to the router). Simple and effective...

Re: Install Mint on a 32GB Flash Drive

This might be too simple - but you did check if the desktop boots first from usb, then hd etc? I know with my own desktop I forgot to check that and could not boot even though all the progs were on the usb. Changed the boot process and voila every usb worked on the desktop. I know, it's silly.

Solved Re: Video Driver for AJP Notebook

Just to mention this - installing Linux-Lite instead of old Mint solved the problem. I tied Lubuntu as well but that didn't even start properly. Don't ask me why, perhaps the Linux-Lite has a better video driver or choice. It works rather well. Even on this laptop that was in use when Methuselah was...

Re: Video Driver for AJP Notebook

Thanks for reply- I have some fun trying to make this oldie work properly. I just about managed to copy the terminal output and transfer that to my 'normal' desktop. As such you will have to do with the text file I copied. Hope that will suffice. If anything else, just let me know. System: Host: hen...
