Re: Multiple Keyboard Layouts

I used to have LM 17 and I used iBus on there, which allowed me as many layouts as I wanted I m astonished. Also in LM 17.x (Cinnamon desktop) 4 is the limit. Well perhaps it wasn't "as many as I wanted", but I'm pretty sure I had more than 4. I also don't recall seeing the Add button greyed out so...

Multiple Keyboard Layouts

Hi all, I'm running the latest version of LMDE 2, and I am wondering if it's possible to have more than 4 keyboard layouts? It seems that 4 is the max, and after that point the Add button is greyed out. Before I installed LMD2, I used to have LM 17 and I used iBus on there, which allowed me as many ...

Re: System Backup

Hey all, thank you so much for your replies and advice. The software that I needed to use that would only run on Windows was for an online ESL school based in China. I needed to install the software just to even have the evaluation session! Unfortunately I didn't get the job. But the good news is th...

Re: Webcam not recognized

As far as I can tell there isn't a switch. But I'll do some digging, including trying the Live DVD of LM, and see what I can find. I'll report anything that might help back here. Thanks guys.

Re: System Backup

Hey all, thanks again to all those who responded. I ended up backing up the major folders in my /home directory to my ext hdd. I'm on another laptop now and put LMDE 2 on it. Then I just copied over the backed up folders over.

Re: Switch to LMDE 2

If you have a separate home partition, you could keep that. If you don't have a separate home partition you'll have to back up its contents and restore that after installing LMDE 2. Do you know if you have a separate partition for /home? Hi xenopeek, I'm so sorry for never responding to you! I didn...

Webcam not recognized

Hi all, I recently put LMDE2 on a new machine - an HP Compaq Presario CQ42. Everything pretty much works great except for one thing: the camera. I first noticed it when trying to do a video call with Google Hangouts. Skype doesn't recognize it. I even tried Cheese, and it says no device found. It's ...

Re: System Backup

I looked up your model and you may want to check again with regards to RAM. There might be another empty slot underneath the currently filled slot. If there is, the virtualbox solution might be a go. Thanks JerryF, I will check that out! I was certain my laptop only had one slot, but I'll pull it a...

Re: System Backup

Thanks phd21 and jimallyn. My laptop (an HP EliteBook 6930p) has only one RAM slot, and afaik you can't get 8GB DIMMs, which means I'm stuck with 4GB. I also never thought of dual-booting due to my HD only being 160GB, and Windows usually needing a fair amount of space. As for what I'll be teaching,...

System Backup

HI all, so I've been using LMDE 2 for probably 1/2 - 3/4 of a year, and I'm loving it a lot! However, due to a possible job, I might need to reinstall Windows. This job would require specialised software that only runs on Windows or Mac. I have Oracle VirtualBox but 1) my system only has 4 GB of RAM...

Re: "Upgrade" 32-bit to 64-bit

Hi all, my apologies for those who asked me further questions. I haven't signed into the LM Forums pretty much since my last reply on this thread. For anyone still curious what I did, I actually decided to go with LMDE 2 only because I'm more used to Debian (used to use it back around the early 2000...

Re: "Upgrade" 32-bit to 64-bit

One potential problem I see is that the list of software you'll generate is of course all 32 bit stuff, and you will want the 64 bit stuff after installing the 64 bit OS. I don't know if the system is smart enough to handle that or not. Yeah I realized that as well. I have enough experience to watc...

Re: "Upgrade" 32-bit to 64-bit

Do you know of any way to have apt output a list of installed programs? The Backup Tool will do that. Not sure which desktop environment you are using, but in Cinnamon, click Menu, Administration, Backup Tool, Backup software selection. Beautiful! Thank you! (I'm using MATE, but just did a search f...

Re: "Upgrade" 32-bit to 64-bit

You can backup your "home" partition/directory where you installed your programs and restore it after a new installation, but it's not guaranteed that it will work. Ok, thanks. Do you know of any way to have apt output a list of installed programs? Also, I have added some extra sources to apt's sou...

"Upgrade" 32-bit to 64-bit

So I just found out that my laptop (HP Elitebook 6930p) has a 64-bit enabled cpu. I assumed it was 32-bit when I first installed LM and used the 32-bit version. I would now like to put on the 64-bit edition of 17.3. Of course I know I can't just upgrade; I have to do a fresh install. But is there an...

Re: Replacing LM 17.3 with LMDE 2

Oh well, I doubt I'll miss all those extra media hotkeys anyway. Media keys are working perfectly for me. Out of the box support with the 3.x kernel series. Beautiful! Then I'm going to keep the LM install on laptop #1 and put LMDE on laptop #2. Thanks to Crewp, Cosmo., and killer de bug for all yo...

Re: Replacing LM 17.3 with LMDE 2

I know I can pretty much just copy /home over to the new laptop (after I've installed LMDE). I would avoid doing this. Copy your personal folders but not the config folders. Unless you know exactly what you are doing. You may not need all the config folders, some may be for a different version than...

Yes, probably a little bit slow. Also there should be no memory-intensive programs open on the host.
Sounds good. Thanks again!

Re: Replacing LM 17.3 with LMDE 2

Because you seem a little unsure, I would suggest you download LMDE ISO and run it from there to see if you like it....You said you used Debian in the past, so you know PPA's are out, on LMDE, but if you don't tweak a lot, or experiment you wont see big difference in functionality. Thank you for th...
