Re: How to disable Secure Boot on Asus motherboard

Hmmm, I hope this doesn't complicate things. When I first built this computer, almost 10 years ago now, it had an MSI mobo which required a UEFI boot. A lightning strike took it out and it got the Asus, but that UEFI partition is still there and I don't think I ever formatted it. It is no longer the...

How to disable Secure Boot on Asus motherboard

Just installed LM20.3 on my daily driver. It has an Asus mobo and I haven't found a way to disable secure boot. I'm getting old and the brain isn't as sharp as it once was, so when I bolloxed the system attempting to install NVidia drivers on Debian Bullseye I decided I needed a more user-friendly d...

Looks like you need to enable multi-arch and install the 32-bit libs.

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

Will it be possible to install Wine without a lot of hassle? Most Debian based distros don't make this very easy. For me having Wine installed is a must. Thanks. sudo apt install wine this is a lot of hassle? Or do you mean that getting "X" program to work right under WINE is a lot of has...

Re: Can't print from Ubuntu to LMDE

More info before anyone can even guess! The devil's in the details! Start with make/model of printer, give exact versions of all OSs, maybe try to retrieve logs from the failed attempts. You could try things like disabling firewalls, you could reboot your router. But nobody is going to make even an ...

Yes, that coincided with a kernel update from 4.9.0.6 to 4.9.0.7. Sounds likely somebody copied it to the wrong repository. I doubt LMDE2 will ever get a 4-series kernel.

Re: LMDE Users

As with most things Linux, it's a matter of personal taste and requirements. And abilities. The main edition is great for noobs and those who want it to work without fussing about with it. LMDE appeals to tinkerers like myself, and those who want to get the last little bit of speed out of their hard...

Yes, Debian Stable is currently running 4.9.0.7. This can be worked around, but it's not a plug-n-play type thing.

Re: Force mint to boot from usb

I wouldn't try to make them. You need to consult the manual FOR THE COMPUTER, not the OS, and change the boot options in the BIOS. Personally I wouldn't have a clue how to do that on a Mac. GRUB will be no help at all.

Currently running 2.75.1 on a Debian Stretch installation, seems to work fine. What is wrong with the 2.50 version you have now? Somebody up the street has something shinier?

Interesting. I still have CM12 on my old LG 'phone, I think there's a CM13 update but I've seen no reason to mess with it.

Re: Changing Droid to LMDE2

I haven't tried LineageOS, but I have fiddled with Debian (and other) installs on my Asus TFs. I'd like to say the results varied, but fact is, pure Linux sucks on 'droids. A couple of times I actually got Debian running, even once a GUI desktop, very slowly and with no sound or wi-fi. I'm sure a te...

Re: How much computer/linux/non-linux experience for LMDE?

Well, somebody has to play with the bleeding-edge stuff, so the bugs get worked out and it can filter down to being stable. My big desktop, which is my daily workhorse, runs LMDE. I'm having a great time configuring Stretch on my 2010 Dell laptop. Arch will get replaced on the Chromebook with Stretc...

Re: How much computer/linux/non-linux experience for LMDE?

Debian will go a lot more nicely on the Chromebook, I'm sure (I'm trying to figure out how you got Arch on the d  mn thing in the first place. You're either really good or a bit more masochistic than I. Perhaps a bit of both...) Of course, they have "fixed" Arch so a lot of softwar...

Re: Without a Driver Manager, does LMDE "use" my Nvidia graphics card?

Am I reading this wrong? I don't understand what stretch-backports means (nor backports in any other context, despite using backports myself to get a Qualcomm wifi card working under 17.3), but I do feel like I understand version 390.48 must be later than what's offered in the Driver Manager in Min...

Re: How much computer/linux/non-linux experience for LMDE?

Well, TMI, but my story is similar. All this computer stuff takes the place of the addictive substances that ruled my life 20 years ago. Of course I have something to show for dinking with the computers. But in a fit of withdrawal symptoms, I'd bought a Chromebook mainly to see what all the fuss was...

Re: No sound, no analog sound device on Dell Optiplex 5050

Start with basics. Open a terminal and type in "alsamixer". Likely you will get the single slider setting for the PulseAudio volume; hit F6 and select HDA Audio card. Play with its settings, no mouse, you just use arrow keys to change sliders and raise/lower, and the M key to mute/unmute. ...

Re: Wireless and Bluetooth not working

Probably just a matter of finding the right driver package, installing and rebooting. Let's see...start by opening the software manager and typing "firmware-iwlwifi" in the search box. Is there a little green checkmark next to its icon? If not double-click it and install it in the next scr...
