Re: Pointer speed doesn't work after upgrade

The mouse sliders are broken in all the *buntu 18.04 flavors I have tried. the only "fix" that worked for me was to disable acceleration completely and adjust sensitivity with the mouse hardware (dpi setting) itself. sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-mouse-acceleration.conf paste in: Section "...

Re: Updater keeps giving me error message

I'll throw this out there just in case... Since some boneheaded update a few days or week(ish) ago when I run sudo apt-get update or sudo apt update, it hangs on ubuntu.security."something I forget" and apparently it is to do with trying to use ipv6 and failing. Anyway the workaround that worked for...

Re: Add launcher to panel from menu creates Thunar istead of cho

I get the same behaviour from Mint 17.2 - 18.3.

No idea the cause but the workaround for me has been to just add the launcher (let's say for VLC Media Player) and when it makes a Thunar launcher in error, delete it and repeat, and the second attempt has always worked.

Re: 18.3 Xfce Wireless connects but is dead/dies in seconds

Updated to kernel 4.13.0-21-generic, and so far so good. Got here and have run a few youtube videos all the way through at 720p in another tab as I am browsing/editing here. It's a short test, but it seems fixed! Hopefully the new kernel does not break something else. Edit: Well, the new kernel impr...

Re: 18.3 Xfce Wireless connects but is dead/dies in seconds

You might want to turn this off if you can (from newegg product listing) "GreenWLAN featured in theENUWI-1XN42 delivers optimum energy efficiency with smart power management." Here's my procedure to fix THAT RTL8188CUS: 1. iwconfig section shows: Power Management:off 2. I'll give the patch thing a ...

18.3 Xfce Wireless connects but is dead/dies in seconds

My wireless is refusing to work in Mint 18.x(3 currently) Xfce. I've been searching but only finding problems unlike mine. Any ideas or pointers would be greatly appreciated. For the record, it works flawlessly on Windows, and old versions (forgot specifics now) of Linux. The router security is WPA2...

Re: How do I share a directory to linux and windows PCs on a local network in Mint 18.3 Sylvia Xfce?

I'll take a shot at this...from an Xfce point of view. First, accessing a shared folder/drive on a Windows 10 machine from a Linux machine has resulted in nothing but grief for me...so F That! I got the same "Failed to retrieve share list from server: Connection timed out." no matter what hoops of f...

Re: passwords

EDIT: Probably really good info for some folks in above post. Thanks for that. In my case I want to have/enter my password for my user at logon and never again and the method I posted further up seems to do just that. I like playing around with Linux but the "security" drives me nuts. I'm fine with ...

Re: passwords

In my case, I actually do want a user login password, just not when I am running updates, and synaptic and the like. If a hacker gets in far enough to be authenticated as my user, none of the rest is going to stop him anyway...and that is why I have my partitions imaged. If anything bad happens, I s...

Re: passwords

/sigh I would also like to know how to do this, mainly to stop password prompts every time I change...ANYTHING, or want open...ANYTHING. Synaptic? Gparted? Just want to peek at software sources, not even make changes, just to refresh your memory if you added that PPA or not? I don't mind it at login...

Re: Safe to remove Rhythmbox Pidgin and others?

Whoops, sorry about that. It's 18.1 Xfce.

Thanks for the simulate command, I was not aware of that one yet. They seem harmless enough to remove, guess I'll just give it a try for a while. I have backup images made if something goes bad later.

Safe to remove Rhythmbox Pidgin and others?

Does anyone know if there is any reason not to remove unwanted (in my case) programs like Rhythmbox, and Pidgin? Are they in anyway linked to the system or have needed libraries, etc? I find Rhythmbox especially annoying since I prefer Deadbeef instead, and Rhythmbox adds extra junk/bloat to the not...

Re: Xfce 18 and now 18.1 Wallpaper crash/reboot (+workaround)

I'm guessing the problem was because some of the files were in a weird format, e.g. the "non-RGB color profiles". Did you have thunar set to display thumbnails? I did have Thunar set to display thumbnails, that was default, and that may well be the problem (tumbler?), at least when combined with th...

Xfce 18 and now 18.1 Wallpaper crash/reboot (+workaround)

I am having the same problem as I did in Xfce 18 beta, 18, and now 18.1 with ANYTHING to do with accessing wallpapers crashing and rebooting the system. I cannot even browse the wallpaper folders in Thunar (user or root). Cannot access the "Desktop" settings at all. Even sitting at the greeter will ...

Re: Cinnamon crashes after updating Nvidia driver to 367.57

I am running Mint 17.3 Xfce, so this may not be helpful but... I installed 367.57 and I was able to boot up and run it fine, but there was a new error that flashes by so fast I couldn't see much of it. Copied from another thread, I believe it was this error or very similar: "failed to execute /bin/s...

Re: [SOLVED] Re-order The Grub Boot Menu?

For her I would set it that way, change the timeout to 2-4 seconds and boot it once to her OS. From then on she can just boot, reboot as normal without touching the GRUB screen and there is not a long delay...just enough for you to change it when needed. Also if you hit one of the arrow keys during ...

Re: [SOLVED] Re-order The Grub Boot Menu?

I always use the first method posted by Laurent85, but just an FYI in case you didn't catch on to this part... Once you do the grub changes and reboot, you have to select "Other OS" and boot to it. After that rebooting will/should remain with "Other OS" selected and boot to it by "default", until yo...

Re: Enable Mint 17.3 XFCE system sounds

For anyone having a problem with this age old issue, i'll put all the steps required in one place to get system sounds working. That worked somewhat. Doing all that got the annoying click and "buthump" sounds on almost every click of the mouse on anything (sometimes more than one sound at a time), ...

Re: Enable Mint 17.3 XFCE system sounds

ByeByeXP, I did all the above in Mint 17.3 Xfce, except I set "/Net/SoundThemeName string value = freedesktop" because that is the sound theme in "/usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/". I also tried "default", and "LinuxMint" which also did not work. I still get absolutely not a single peep from an...
