Re: checkdisk utility under wine

Copying the data from one drive (or place, or partition) that is "NTFS" to "ext4", or visa-versa, is transparent. You do not need any additional special software or drivers in Linux Mint for doing this. i will use freefilesync for this task for sure. i heard it is a good idea to...

Re: checkdisk utility under wine

@phd21: thank you for this very detailed reply. i will watch out for minitools and ubcd4win and give it a try then. there is hopefully never the need for a partition recovery, it is just a plain 'simple' checkdisk a la xp with repair function, that i would like to run occasionally on my fat32 stick ...

Re: checkdisk utility under wine

i bet i am not the only one still using ntfs media under linux. therefore i still count on one of the bootable isos, maybe one these also offers an integrated checkdisk & repair function (perhaps minitools)? so if you already know of a reliable tool to suggest, please feel free and drop me a lin...

Re: checkdisk utility under wine

sure, reformatting the stick is no big deal, but i keep it for exchanging stuff with the non-linux world. and there is also an external hd in ntfs format + reasons to stick with that format; for now at least (migrating to ext4 is the plan for the future). therefore i still need to be able to check t...

Re: checkdisk utility under wine

@karlchen: yes, now that i know checkdisk and wine will not work for good, the main concern could now be narrowed down to: how to 'repair' corrupt vfat & ntfs devices without windows :) this is a whole lot of possibilities to try out, thanks a lot! anybody already using one of these tools for a ...

Re: checkdisk utility under wine

thank you both very much. i already thought this is not going to work.. well, regarding fsck, the man page states - check and repair linux filesystems. what filesystems does it cover, nearly all but ntfs i guess. talking about gparted on usb stick, will it also autocorrect errors when i do a disk-ch...

checkdisk utility under wine

i recently had problems with a fat32 usb stick. under windows i used a tool called checkdisk (disk scan + autocorrect errors), now i wonder, if it is safe to use under wine as well?

Re: export taskbar starters & icons config

thank you. i could export to a *.json file, but as it is very small in size, only 1kb, i doubt it preserved everything out of the box. so i was thinking of testing a dock instead of putting all starters in the taskbar. can you recommend an up to date & (very) leightweight dock for cinnamon 2.8? ...

@daveinuk: nice theme that you are using. i would be very much interrested, where to get it and how to activate it under mint cinnamon.

Re: looking for tools

i will have a look at gtk-hash, thank you.

on the other hand, i would prefer a standalone drag & drop hash-tool if exists.

Re: linux firewall - restrict all in/outgoing connections bu

Install gufw. Should be easy to make your settings. Note that you have to make rules on the base of addresses and ports; you cannot do this on the base of programs.. is this true for the firewall in general or only gufw (gui) related? i so much hoped there is an easy program based config setup vari...

linux firewall - restrict all in/outgoing connections but a

ok, this is the task: i would like to set the linux firewall to permanently deny all in/outgoing transfer and concentrate on a few exceptions only - all crucial ''os related stuff'', firefox, thunderbird, rss manager. anybody already running this minimalistic approach and could help out a newbie wit...

Re: completely turn off thumbnails

meanwhile i think i found the ideal solution: i have already set up a zram ramdisk with the help of this forum. i just leave thumbnails intact, but channel all to my ramdisk/temp folder. is this possible and how to do that?
