Re: What would you use if Mint wasn't available?

Ubuntu and install Cinnamon, or if that's considered cheating, either Ubuntu Mate or MX-17.

I know it's not your primary interest, but for info I hear usenet's not that good at all these days for binary content.

Re: Forum Police?

viewtopic.php?f=46&t=259045&p=1401238#p1401238 , I think the sentence "If you cannot provide specifics, you are doing more harm than good on this thread, but thanks for trying." of user Eduardo103 is indeed very disputable. As a user I would avoid using such a language and somebody trying to help, ...

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

Whilst I wouldn't read too much into a short term Distrowatch ranking, I think Mint's made a poor decision here with the update manager. It's one of the most criticised elements of Mint but I've always understood and agreed with their decisions up until now. At this point I think they've made a poor...

Yes, 'File Manager,' you must be trying pretty hard not to come across this.

Point zero releases aren't usually that inspiring owing to the effort required to rebuild on a new base. I'm excited for 19.1.

Re: Who are you?

I like to avoid hassle where I can. 'Friends' get nasty, play the 'get as many drinks out of everyone and never open my wallet', manipulate etc, I dump them. I now have a decent size group of really solid friends who are 100% trust worthy and 100% fun to hang with. My car was bought with economy and...

Re: Ubuntu installs while Mint chokes?

So this forum's rules of registration are silly, irritating, AND counterproductive. I just wanted to ask a simple install question, for god sake and maybe will never need to post here again.... Didn't you already do that rant in another thread and get an answer (whether you disagree with it or not)...

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

If that's the current state of play, it's broke IMO for a couple reasons: 1) A major change like that should have been announced properly. 2) The documentation on the update manager has not been updated. 'Apply all updates' is not the default setting or the setting recommended for most users. 3) The...

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

Well if you raise a bug report on Github, I suspect this would be considered high priority as it seriously impacts usability and ease of use.

Re: Forum has been upgraded (report issues here)

Only fa-chevron-circle-up fa-chevron-circle-up looks somewhat nice. But it's confusing as that same icon is in the bottom right of every post, to jump to the top of the page. I like the chevron. Could replace the other use of the chevron (which let's face it how often do users ever interact with) w...

Re: Forum has been upgraded (report issues here)

@xeno, I find the grey on grey buttons above the text area when typing a forum post to be very washed out. Any chance of going to black on grey and (possibly) even adding a splash of colour to a couple of the icons (like 'font colour' and 'insert image?') I find this makes it quicker to differentiat...

What desktop environment are you using? (XFCE, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE?)
It works on Cinnamon.

Oh, actually I'm using Waterfox. Maybe they've removed this functionality from newer versions of FF?

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

Good point, Jim. I always update the lot so I've not seen this, but if that's how it's working it will only cause confusion. As per the descriptions accompanying update manager levels, I don't think there is one single recommended policy. 'Always update everything' is only recommended as an option f...

Yeah Damien, tell me about it mate! :) It gets better... some guy I vaguely know at the local club this afternoon started bigging me up about how great I am with computers and how my old man tells him how great I am at work programming computers. Re: modify and then compile the newest version of xboxdrv

You may be a newbie, but compiling drivers isn't really a subject suitable for the newbie section, IMO.

Mint 18 series is based on Ubuntu 16.04 so those instructions should work for it.
