i solved the problem by installing AbiWord which had no problem opening the document correctly. I have a spare disk drive and I plan to drop back to Mint 18.3 for daily use. Works fine on my laptop and spare desktop. I'll keep the 19.1 drive and try again when 19.2 or 19.3 is released. I'm finding ...

Try XFCE instead of Cinnamon. If the machine is 32 bit, you have to use 32 bit iso to install.

I am afraid youu have to use keyboard, select advanced option in grub, and choose the kernel you want to choose from.

Try xfce 32 bit instead of Cinnamon. Don't go in for LVM till you have enough experience with it.

Try purging the LO on 19.1 and install the same version as on 18.3. Good luck

There is a icon at the right bottom side which will have a right sign which will indicate that you are up to date
