Re: What are the benefits of doing a fresh-install of Mint 20 VS upgrading from 19.3?
I have been using Mint as my main OS since 2015. In that time, I have a lot of stuff installed , and I am dependent on those apps. Formatting the hard drive, installing the OS, and reinstalling plus configuring all the applications and then restoring all the data would be a 3 to 4 day project. I don...

Re: Mint 20 upgrade lost Virtual Box
Following the instructions posted by "lyca" I was able to get VBox up and running. That solves the immediate problem of being able to install it, but the original problem of the Package Installer freezing up still exists. I posted on the Virtual Box forum about it. Hopefully, they'll have ...

Re: Mint 20 upgrade lost Virtual Box
One additional piece of info. I have two Mint computers: my main desktop machine that I had the problems with, and a laptop that I don't really use for a lot. The laptop did not have Virtual Box on it at all when I upgraded to 20 last week sometime. As an experiment, I tried to install V.B. on the l...

Ok. Thank you. I will try those things when I get back to it. But I won't have time again for a few days.

Mint 20 upgrade lost Virtual Box
So I went through the recommended process of removing PPA's, downgrading packages and so on. I thankfully, took all the before and after Timeshift snapshots. For the most part the upgrade went smoothly and almost everything looked good. Until I tried to start Virtual Box. I found that Virtual Box ha...

Don't install the new Teamviewer.
There was a Teamviewer update today. New version 15.5.3, Old version 15.4.4445. Every connection now says "Cannot connect to partner".
I've spent half the morning running Timeshift and putting everything back to the way it was. It's working again. Geez...don't need this now.

Re: High resolution scanner recommendation ?
^^ What I understand as high resolution is the photo quality of the scan is equal to the original photo. The scan quality from my little Canon all-in-one TS6020 is definitely below that mark. The scan results are not as clear and the colors are off. I'm looking for a product that will faithfully rep...

High resolution scanner recommendation ?
I have boxes and boxes of old family photos that I'd like to scan and catalog. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality, high resolution scanner that works well with Linux? I don't believe my little Canon all-in-one is up to the task and it's also slow as a turtle. It needs to be a flatb...

Re: Backup options
It is too bad the author of ARECA BACKUP has abandoned it so it is about time to move on. I've been using Areca for several years for differential backups and the one thing I like is the way it can do a merge to update the full-backup base to keep it current. So after a set number of backups, you ca...

Re: [SOLVED] Unknown File Type. The file "network" has no known programs associated with it.
Thank you. Barada Nikto. It only bothered me because I didn't understand it. That was very helpful and I appreciate the answer. The only Windows I'm sharing with is a Virtual Box Windows 10 which I use for Quicken on one of the hosts. Virtual Box sharing takes care of what I need so I see no need fo...

Re: Unknown File Type. The file "network" has no known programs associated with it.
^^ Thank you...So that was probably it. After fiddling with this for hours, I remembered Timeshift which I had not thought about in forever. I hit the restore-button which put everything back to the day before and that has fixed the issue. It's just the two machines at my home; desktop and laptop th...

Re: Unknown File Type. The file "network" has no known programs associated with it.
Thank you. It's cinnamon and Mint 19.1. When it asks to select a program I keyed in "nemo". But that opens the "Files" screen. Network appears on the sidebar of that screen but when you select it, it says network:/// Nemo cannot handle network. So nemo doesn't work. Where in the ...

[SOLVED] Unknown File Type. The file "network" has no known programs associated with it.
Not network-manager for the internet. The Network icon on the desktop where you see the file shares.
I'd reinstalled samba and now when I click the Network icon I get this pop-up message.
It gives me a screen to select a program but I have no idea what to pick. Could someone please help?

Apparently YAHOO is no longer providing weather data (to anyone) so the app has nothing to load.

Re: So much for the weather applet
Actually, I've found the Weather Desklet works pretty darn good. So I've switched to that.
I spent about half a day trying to get the WeatherBug desktop app to work in WINE but couldn't. It seems anything I try in WINE that needs .NET doesn't work.
