Network security settings in /etc/sysctl.conf - Uncomment, or?

As I was poking around the Easy Linux Tips Project site and came to an entry about reducing swappiness, it seemed like a decent idea for my system, and it had me editing the /etc/sysctl.conf file. In that file were several network security settings, with the note that they could improve network secu...

Re: Linux malware article, with examples. How can Mint users mitigate the risk of these and similar attacks?

Home users may generally be lower risk than corporate users, but did you ever stop to consider just how complacent home users can get with security, and also now with the pandemic and many more people working from home, the extreme rise in sensitive company information passing through our home machi...

Re: Linux malware article, with examples. How can Mint users mitigate the risk of these and similar attacks?

Please don't dismiss malware that has been documented. I'm not asking how to stick my head under the sand and ignore stuff that, as the article specifically does say, has been verified by government intelligence agencies.

Linux malware article, with examples. How can Mint users mitigate the risk of these and similar attacks?

Other than basic stuff, like setting a root password, not running as root or using sudo without being very careful, keeping your firewall up, keeping the browser and other attack surfaces isolated with AppArmor, keeping the system and applications updated, and trying to only use software from the of...

Re: Error installing package mint-meta-codecs

Restored defaults in Software Sources, same original install error on mint-meta-codecs. Other software comes along fine, and I haven't done anything odd. I chose some faster mirrors as part of the Update Manager setup, and most software I've installed has been from the Software Center. Thank you for...

Code: Select all

apt install --fix-broken
Reading package lists... Done

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Re-attempting the mint-meta-codecs install after it still produces the same error.

Re: Best GPU driver for a Lenovo ThinkPad X140e with AMD A4-5000/HD8330 iGPU?

It's possible to use the amdgpu experimental support with Kabini GPU because they are first generation GCN. The amdgpu driver performs marginally better but do not expect miracles. I just got a very similar reply from Reddit and rebooted after making those changes... to see an email letting me know...

X140e isn't a Chromeook, but thanks for the answer.

I bought this as an ultraportable to Reddit with a nice screen and keyboard, stream media, and have a better user experience than a phone. So far it's done all of that very well. Any gaming that it can manage is gravy, as some say.

[Solved] Best GPU driver for a Lenovo ThinkPad X140e with AMD A4-5000/HD8330 iGPU?

I know that it's netbook class and not all that powerful, but many games from Steam just force close when started, which makes me think that perhaps I am not availing myself of the best possible driver. (For example, both Skyrim LE and SE do not get to the launcher, BioSock does show the menu at all...

[Likely solved, untested] Laptop - Internal speakers and bluetooth headphones share the same sound output volume?

Linux Mint 20 Ulyana, Cinnamon, x64 On my Lenovo ThinkPad X140e, I tried connecting my Bose QC35 to it, via Bluetooth. I played a portion of a video (which came through the headphones), and then paused the video. When I resumed it, the audio came through my built-in laptop speakers. When I explored ...

Can someone please explain to me why the repos don't just carry Firefox's direct updates, and why by default we are stuck with a modified version of Firefox that lags on security updates? (About box specifically says "Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint - mint 1.0) I'm aware that I could add their P...

Re: VLC and YouTube video freezes briefly, while audio keeps going, then they re-sync - How to fix?

Yes, 1 monitor, running off the 750 Ti. Previously, the 970 was dedicated solely to Folding@Home for team EVGA. However, since they changed their reward limits to favor more powerful cards, I may someday remove the 750 Ti and promote the 970 to primary GPU duties. My system is in an awkward spot to ...

Re: Getting a new 2 in 1 in a couple months. Touch-screen, can fold into a tablet, etc. Can Linux Mint make full use of

Linux Mint 19.1 has supported touch screen, backlit keyboard with the usual functions on Yoga laptop. You will have to install it on your machine to test. I wasn't (mostly) asking about hardware support. For example, in Windows, I can (theoretically, as I don't have the machine here to test) open u...
