Re: [Solved] Canon Pixma ip4500 problem

I have marked this topic as solved as the printer does work with 2 of my 3 Linux machines. It would appear that Canon drivers for this printer are only available for 32-bit systems so I will use the machines that do work when I need to print.

Re: Canon Pixma ip4500 problem

Thanks pdc_2
Unfortunately the driver you found is for 32-bit systems I need the 64-bit version. I tried to search the Canon Asia site but found myself going round in circles and getting nowhere! Canon Europe reports no driver available for Linux [See Attached image].

Re: Canon Pixma ip4500 problem

I connected my 18.3 Cinnamon machine to the printer and it recognised it immediately and I was able to print a document successfully. The problem seems to be related to xfce as the printer application wouldn't open with that machine. I will try to reinstall Printer in xfce and see if that makes any ...

Re: Canon Pixma ip4500 problem

Thanks for the reply. I followed the instruction on that website but it assumes that you can download a driver from Canon which I wasn’t able to do. I have another machine running 18.3 Cinnamon and the Printer application does open in that so I’ll try to install using Cinnamon.

[Solved] Canon Pixma ip4500 problem

I am running Linux Mint 18.3 xfce 64-bit and am trying to get my Canon Pixma IP4500 printer set up. If I try to print a document the printer is not listed and when I try to open the Printer application nothing happens. I have been to the Canon website to look for a driver but it says that this print...

Re: [SOLVED] Windows 7 evaluation period issue

Thanks xenopeek for pointing me in the right direction. It turns out that 10 days is the grace period you have before activating the license. Once activated the license reverts to 90 days.

[SOLVED] Windows 7 evaluation period issue

I installed Windows 7 as guest in Virtualbox following the instructions on the Easy Linux Tips website. After the initial 90 day evaluation period expired I performed a rearm as detailed on the Windows 7 wallpaper. After a few days a message popped up stating that the license had expired so I perfor...

Re: In praise of Linux Mint

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a great need for a flat bed scanner these days but it's nice to know that it works if I need it.
Someone on here suggested using xsane for scanning so I will probably take a look at that.

In praise of Linux Mint

I have an old Epson flat bed scanner (Perfection 1250) that I haven't used for a few years. I decided to try to get it working with Windows Vista. I spent ages downloading drivers and installing software but I could not get it to work. After giving up on Windows I thought "I wonder if it would work ...

Re: Virtualbox Locking up machine

If you read the posts in the virtualisation area above you will find the answer to your problem. It's basically caused by the fact that the version of Virtualbox in the repo is not compatible with the latest kernels. You need to download the latest version of Virtualbox from their website.

Re: Random Kernel Panic on boot - not syncing

I have the same issue with one of my machines, it seems to happen after updates are issued for initramfs-tools. I use the following workaround [found on this forum] to get the machine to boot. Boot using a live Linux DVD. When the countdown starts press the down arrow to highlight the first entry "S...

Re: [Solved] Virtual machine crashes system after kernel update

For information, when I updated Virtualbox to both 5.1 and later 5.2.4 I was prompted to update guest additions as part of the update process. My Windows 7 guest OS is working fine now. There is another update available [5.2.6] but I haven't installed that one yet.

Re: [Solved] Virtual machine crashes system after kernel update

I have successfully updated vbox to version 5.1.30 and my Windows 7 guest is working normally again. I was surprised how easy it was to upgrade, I just downloaded the deb package + the extension pack and installed them. I was prompted to update guest additions to 5.1.30. If I decide to upgrade to ve...

Re: Virtual machine crashes system after kernel update

Thanks cosmo,
I'll take your advise and install Vbox 5.1. I'll post the results here later.
I installed Vbox by copying and pasting the link in Easy Linux Tips which installed Vbox 5.0.

Re: Virtual machine crashes system after kernel update

Hello curtvaughan
I just saw your post and I'm definitely not an expert but I doubt that you will have the security patch if you roll back to an earlier kernel. Perhaps someone with more experience could confirm?

Re: Virtual machine crashes system after kernel update

I have been checking this forum and it seems that Vbox 5 doesn't work with the latest kernel and that Vbox 5.1 is required. I don't normally install anything from outside the official repository so I will need to find out how to do it if I want to continue using this software. There is some useful i...

[Solved] Virtual machine crashes system after kernel update

I am running LM18,3 Cinnamon 64-bit and decided to update the kernel as recommended in the Linux blog in order to get the security update for Meltdown/Spectre. The updated kernel is 4,13,0-26, Everything appeared to be working normally until I tried to open Windows 7 in Virtualbox. This causes the h...
