Re: suspicious/weird updates descriptions?

I don't think that you can put the blame of the Mint team in this case. The process in question was libsecret, which is part of Gnome. The description is a direct copy from the Gnome Developer page description. https://developer.gnome.org/libsecret/ Which is probably, exactly as Pjotr suggests, slig...

Re: How do I switch between two operating systems in bios.

In order to access an operating system through BIOS I believe that you need the operating systems installed on completely separate hard disks/ssd. That way you can use BIOS to select a particular disk/ssd at startup & so load that operating system. If you have multiple operating systems installe...

Re: update error message

I don't think that winehg is causing the issue, sorry.

I have done Google on the error & it looks like it is probably a bug that effects a few people.
Sorry, don't know if there is a cure, but I suspect that it is not much more than annoying if your updates are still going through..

Re: update error message

I suggest that you look in Software Sources from the Menu.
There look at the Additional Repositories tab.

Is the check box under the original installation disk ticked?
If so, uncheck it - or Remove that source completely - your choice..

If not have you another, erroneous source ??

Not absolutely sure which one you are on about.
However, if it is CVE-2021-3560 then it has certainly been fixed in Mint 20.1 - via Ubuntu.

Re: Should I install LM 19 or 20?

You are, sort of, right in a way, tellymandeus.. :D Mint 19.x is now on version 19.3 & there will be no further developments on it, only updates until it goes end of life in 2023. Mint 20.x is still under development/improvement. Its current latest version is Mint 20.1, however as the year(s) ro...

Re: Backup tool; Timeshift; Back in Time Clarification

The Backup Tool is the best free resource to try & re-install your personalised apps & settings on a new install. However it is not a complete tool. I don't think that it can restore fonts & themes nor Applets. Apps are only automatically restored if you originally installed it from the ...

Re: Snapshot defaults

Instead of taking a picture you do regular backups. What do you do when an upgrade gives you issues? Is there an app within Mint which will do determined backups on regular basis automatically? Timeshift is not meant as a system to save a users personal data. It is a system restore resource. 5 time...

Re: Snapshot defaults

Personally I have them all set to off. To me, the most important thing is my data. I have had to reload Mint about 4 times since I started using it about 6 years ago because I had destroyed it. Yes, a snapshot would have saved me a reload but I am willing to live with that. My personal data I would ...

Re: Install, DualBoot, Virtualization Question

im not sure on 500gb ssd with linux mint installed how much to put in root and how much in home and how much in swap, The most space saving way is to just make 1 partition & not bother with a separate partition for /Home. You certainly don't need to bother with a partition for swap anymore - Mi...

Re: installing mint 20 on motile laptop

will do on my next attempt but would still like to know if that edge version only comes with cinnamon. thank you Yes, 20.1 Edge only comes with the Cinnamon flavour. If you want Mate or Xfce then you would need to install the non-Edge version of 20.1 & then add the 5.8 kernel via update manager..

Re: Complete Up-to-date Install without Good Internet

The problem I foresee is that your computer is not your father-in-laws - i.e. they will not be identical in all aspects. However, given that, then my recommendation would be to download & install the 20.1 iso. Then install all updates. Download foxclone & use it to clone the newly updated Mi...

Re: My PC lags a lot / Linux Mint Cinnamon

Well wait until someone else chips in with some advice before you go that far. I know that, in theory, it is easy to install another desktop along side Cinnamon, using the terminal. However, sometimes the 'easy' route can end up with a real mess. I would suggest that you try Pjotr easy linux tips gu...

Re: My PC lags a lot / Linux Mint Cinnamon

I believe that it is possible to install XFCE on top Cinnamon.
However I am not sure that would truly help you, as you would then have 2 desktops installed.
My recommendation would be a clean install of Mint via the XFCE iso..

rumpus is suggesting that you use a different desktop, still with Linux Mint.
Currently you are using the state of the art Cinnamon Desktop, XFCE & Mate are alternative desktops that are available for Mint, but less system intensive than Cinnamon..
