Re: Till the /cow comes home

So I tried installing Grub again, with the result, "can't find /boot/grub/i386-pc". Progress of a sort.

Till the /cow comes home

Hi. I have Ubuntu installed twice on my desktop, and was hoping to dual boot it with Windows 7. But when I try to reinstall Grub, I get an error saying "cannot get the canonical path of /cow." What does this mean? It seems to be a security vulnerability in Ubuntu, etc. Well and good, but how does on...

Re: msdos partition alongside gpt

Sorry about the bump. I want to provide a clearer explanation.

The first disk has EFI modules, but no 'i386-pc' directory under /boot/grub. The second disk is the opposite: /boot/grub/i386-pc exists, but not /boot/efi. Again, how do I add modules to the kernel?

Are you really still running MSDOS?
I think the OP means an MSDOS partition table, i.e. legacy :D
That's what I mean, but FreeDos does seem interesting...

Re: msdos alongside gpt

Thanks for replying. I wonder, should one of the partitions of the GPT drive have the "boot" flag? As it is, Grub sees the second disk as legitimate and the first as "unknown filesystem". Naturally, it's set to boot from the second.

msdos partition alongside gpt

Hello! I have a desktop with two hard disks- a 120GB SSD and a terabyte hard drive. Recently I formatted the former as GPT. What I want to know is, how can I boot them both from Grub? I know one can't have both grub-pc and grub-efi on the same system, but... The SSD has one system, Xubuntu 18.04.1, ...

Change the grub configuration

I'd like it if my Debian system would boot automatically, but right now it's looking for GRUB in a partition that doesn't exist, (hd1,5). I can direct it to the correct partition, but how does one make the changes permanent? Here are the instructions I've been following. Thanks for your help. What I...

Re: Not UTF-8 valid

There's little doubt the script runs binary code- it invokes MojoSetup, which installs a game. abel="Blocks That Matter (GOG.com)" script="./startmojo.sh" scriptargs="" licensetxt="" targetdir="binaries" filesizes="679302" keep="n" quiet="n" It's a very long script; this is just a small sample. Not UTF-8 valid

Hello. I have some bash scripts that don't run properly- namely, scripts from gog.com. Trying to run them, I get the error "gtk: Locale not supported by C library." Opening them in Mousepad results in "This document was not UTF-8 valid." How can I find out what the proper locale is? Thank you. Also,...

I'm certain you can at least replace the flight sim with a native Linux game- which, naturally, will be less resource-intensive. :D Now, if anyone knows of a Linux-native hunting sim...

Re: Have an old xp and w7 laptop, should I install linux and how?

Personally, I don't think you'll regret going with Linux. If you install Windows 10, it will put a lot of unnecessary software- some of which can't be removed!- on your machine. And it will push updates at you. I updated recently and there were a half-dozen programs marked "New" in my Start menu, pl...

Re: How do you open up "Wine Explorer"?

Hi, mintyfreshuser! Wine Explorer is just what it says- Wine's version of Windows Explorer. You can open it by typing winefile into your terminal. (It should default to your Mint home folder.) If you're new around here- welcome!

Unlock Login Keyring stops Vivaldi from running

I just changed my account password for Mint 17.2 Cinnamon- so far, so good. But when I try starting Vivaldi, there's a prompt saying "The password you used to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring." The problem is, I don't remember my previous password. I used the inst...
