Re: Mint Minimal ISO (Yes like Ubuntu)

To me "minimal" means "sans GUI", like Arch. It seems a bit daunting at first, but then you realize how much of the documentation isn't relevant to your computer. nixOS, which is now running on my desktop, has both minimal and GUI images, which have the entire manual in a file. Plus you can install ...

Re: A Very Good Distro

MS makes me violent too. I hate the thought of having a problem, getting an unhelpful message, and then being directed to an agent who knows nothing about Windows. Here in "Linux Land" I can talk to people who actually know the system. Thanks, guys.

ubi-partman failed with exit status 10

I'm hoping to reinstall Mint 19.3 on my laptop (an IdeaPad S145). Running the installer gives me the message, "ubi-partman failed with exit status 10", and says that I should look at /var/log/syslog. I have, but I don't know what parts are relevant. Please advise.

Re: Update Grub from USB

Sorry. It hangs up just after the logo, with a black screen and a flashing cursor (usually Mint starts up within seconds). It's labeled 'nixos' because I was trying to install that system before going with Mint.

Re: Update Grub from USB

OK, now I think we're getting somewhere. I used chroot on the partition in question:

Code: Select all

ls -la /cow
ls: cannot access '/cow': No such file or directory
fdisk -l
fdisk: cannot open /proc/partitions: No such file or directory

Re: Update Grub from USB

I just tried running grub-mkconfig and got this error.

Code: Select all

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of `/cow'.

Re: Update Grub from USB

That's weird. I have Mint 19, not 20, and both of those files are present. Not sure what to if I can't run update-grub on the hard drive.

I tried, but pressing Escape does nothing.

Update Grub from USB

I'm currently running Mint as a live system, hoping to fix what's wrong and boot from the hard drive again. To that end, how do I run update-grub so that it affects the drive instead of the live system?

What if you can't boot from your hard drive? "Sorry, but that drive isn't in /etc/fstab."

connection to bus failed

Hi there. I have a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop that refuses to boot. I checked the log at /var/log/boot.log and found out that "gvfs failed to make a connection to the bus". (There's no mention of which bus it's talking about.) Boot Info I read here that changing Grub to nomodeset will at least partially ...

Re: Till the /cow comes home

So I tried installing Grub again, with the result, "can't find /boot/grub/i386-pc". Progress of a sort.

Till the /cow comes home

Hi. I have Ubuntu installed twice on my desktop, and was hoping to dual boot it with Windows 7. But when I try to reinstall Grub, I get an error saying "cannot get the canonical path of /cow." What does this mean? It seems to be a security vulnerability in Ubuntu, etc. Well and good, but how does on...

Re: msdos partition alongside gpt

Sorry about the bump. I want to provide a clearer explanation.

The first disk has EFI modules, but no 'i386-pc' directory under /boot/grub. The second disk is the opposite: /boot/grub/i386-pc exists, but not /boot/efi. Again, how do I add modules to the kernel?

I think the OP means an MSDOS partition table, i.e. legacy :D
That's what I mean, but FreeDos does seem interesting...

Re: msdos alongside gpt

Thanks for replying. I wonder, should one of the partitions of the GPT drive have the "boot" flag? As it is, Grub sees the second disk as legitimate and the first as "unknown filesystem". Naturally, it's set to boot from the second.

msdos partition alongside gpt

Hello! I have a desktop with two hard disks- a 120GB SSD and a terabyte hard drive. Recently I formatted the former as GPT. What I want to know is, how can I boot them both from Grub? I know one can't have both grub-pc and grub-efi on the same system, but... The SSD has one system, Xubuntu 18.04.1, ...
