Calender software options for Cinnamon 17.2

Hi, Of all the things I like about the Cinnamon 17.2 desktop, the one thing I really hope they include in the upcoming releases is the option to be able to add events and reminders by clicking on any date in the default calendar. Now that would be a really cool feature, I think it's currently availa...

Re: Delay Distro turn on

Yes, it's normal. Some times booting can take a little longer. This also depends on what start-up programs you have turned on. Shut down is always quicker than boot. It isn't anything to worry about. As long as your system boots without any errors it's okay.

Incoming connections disabled, torrents still seeding?

Javascript can be embedded in websites - and mostly it is - and leads to executable code. This code can be needed to make the website work, it can be superfluous and it can be dangerous. Firefox has javascript enabled by default. It can only be disabled with a hidden setting, but this is cumbersome...

Re: Incoming connections disabled, torrents still seeding?

If you get popups this means, that either you have in the preferences -> content popup-blocking disabled or you have set exceptions (see the button beside the option) or they are driven by javascript. The firewall is irrelevant in this context, because you have set (I am at least rather sure) to al...

Re: Incoming connections disabled, torrents still seeding?

Thanks for responding. :) I understand it now. Also, when I access torrent websites, there are pop ups which are most of the time blocked by Firefox, but sometimes they do come through. Can these pop ups compromise my system's security by any way? I'm running cinnamon 17.2, fully updated and my fire...

Incoming connections disabled, torrents still seeding?

Hi, According to the ufw default settings all incoming connections are disabled, why do torrents still seed then? Does this mean that incoming connections are active even though ufw shows they are disabled? I hope my system security isn't compromised. ufw settings - kabir@kabir-G50-80 ~ $ sudo ufw s...

Awesome!
Though I still don't get the radeon temperature, I think that's because I'm not using any proprietary drivers.

New users should IMO use the graphical Software Manager or the Graphical Synaptic.
Synaptic I only use to Lock Versions, but this can be done via command-line also.
Thanks! :)

Re: acpi -t not working, any idea why?

Well, I couldn't get it to work, so I removed it. On a side note, is it better / safer to download software on mint using synaptic or the software manager instead of apt-get install?

Thanks so much for this. I've been getting this warning whenever I run apt-get upgrade and it doesn't let me go further into the upgrade. I'm glad this won't bother me any more :-)

acpi -t not working, any idea why?

Hi, I just installed acpi, wanted to check the system temperature, so I ran command acpi -t and it didn't show anything. All the other acpi commands work, except the -t option and I wonder why. Doing acpi -t just brings back the command prompt without any information. Does anyone know why this could...

Re: Level 3 Updates

You are more than likely never going face a problem installing level 3 updates, which is why they come checked by default. You can read through the "updating software" section available in the "user guide" for greater insight. I install all level 3 updates, haven't faced any problem. I think you cou...

Re: Cant find stdio.h header file

Not a stupid question, but yes you need build-essential (no s at the end) to get the complete gcc compiler stack installed. That's standard across all Debian and Ubuntu based distros. The stdio.h file you found comes from a syslinux package, which is a collection of boot loaders. I don't know what ...

Re: Cant find stdio.h header file

Did you install build-essential? I hate repeating myself, but if you didn't install it then install it. My apologies. I did not intend to refute you. I was only curious as to why gcc doesn't recognize stdio.h from the path - /usr/lib/syslinux/com32/include Since I'm new here, and I do not know much...

Re: Cant find stdio.h header file

I just found stdio.h installed in this path -
/usr/lib/syslinux/com32/include/stdio.h

How do I instruct gcc to pick the header file from this path?
Thanks!

Re: Cant find stdio.h header file

Do I have to install build-essentials? I thought all these header files that gcc requires to compile came pre-installed?
