Re: Who no longer uses Windows?

I was a Mac guy from 1984 until about 2000 when the price finally drove me to Windows. I recently wiped my old MacBook 2.1 that was EOL and installed Mint 18.3 Xfce. The Mac program I really miss is Circus Ponies Notebook, an excellent outliner and organizer of documents and projects. With Windows I...

Re: sugestion for a good email aplication

You may have to go into Settings > Sound and from the Sound Effects tab turn up the volume and uncheck the Mute box of the Alert volume. That is based on Mate (and LM 17.3), but it may be somewhat different if you may be running Cinnamon or Xfce or KDE (you didn't say).

Re: Portable Linux Mint 18 install help

This procedure by pbear creates a bootable USB drive that will boot on a computer that runs via BIOS or via UEFI. The procedure appears in the second post of that thread. The procedure assumes you are using a BIOS (or Legacy)-based computer to perform the install. If you don't have one perhaps you ...

Re: Load persistant Mint to SSD

Thanks to pbear for providing two solutions to the problem of installing a UEFI-compatible LM OS to an external USB drive. [I wasn't aware of the Ubuntu installer bug for external drives.] I already had a BIOS-compatible USB stick with LM on it that worked well with my legacy computers, but I never ...

Re: Erm..where do I start?

Hi phingers.
Do you want to install Linux Mint so that each time you boot up your HDD (or SSD) you can select to run Windows 7 or Linux Mint? (That is called a "dual boot" set up.) Or, do you want to wipe Window from your drive and install Linux Mint as the only operating system on your computer?

Re: Loss of etc/sudo.conf endangers entire system

originally I booted Mint from a flash drive that include both the iso file and software to load it. Do I have to do that again ? Not that it's a problem in itself but I obviously must avoid it overwriting my current Backup files. Yes, boot up LM from your USB flash drive with the installation ISO o...

Re: Themes and icons not installed

The two commands successfully renamed the empty directory /home/scott/.themes to /home/scott/.themes.orig and created a symbolic link /home/scott/.themes to /usr/share/themes. However, no themes show up in the Appearance Preferences (of either of the two user accounts). (I'm going to sleep now. Back...

Re: Themes and icons not installed

If you have themes and icons installed, but they does not appear, the reason can be permissions or they simply have disappeared somehow. Case permissions: Open Terminal and run ls -l /usr/share/themes ... the answer shuld be something like I screwed up by messing with LibreOffice removal(s) and ins...

Re: How to install on mac 5.1 - internal HD from other mac

I recently installed Linux Mint 18.3 Xfce (and Mate for that matter) on a MacBook (mid-2007) that has similar specifications to your computer. Compare your Mac with mine . The procedure I followed was written by Matt Gadient and is found here and in the pdf attachment below. I converted the standard...

Re: New kernel selection

1 Is there a process which updates the Grub default Linux boot to the latest kernel update or not? 2 Was this a process by [X]Ubuntu? 3 Which /etc/grub file would need editing to do the change manually? ... It is the system's responsibility to auto update grub to the latest kernel, and is not Grub ...

Re: Two default browsers - how to correct?

Thanks for teaching me how to clean up ownership issues. The two default browser issue doesn't seem to cause further problems (after the Thunderbird tweak) so I'll just ignore it for now. I switched from FF to Chrome because (before and even after the introduction of Quantum) FF would temporarily fr...

Re: Two default browsers - how to correct?

I reset "browser.shell.checkDefautBrowser" and restarted Firefox. FF still thinks it is the default browswer. I went back and reset all lines in the screen shot below, but that didn't help. Re: Two default browsers - how to correct?

Thanks, Cosmo. I ran the commands you provided. After logging back into the primary account (scott) I ran find $HOME ! -user $USER -type f to check the results and it returned nothing, which I assume is good. That said, Firefox still shows itself as the default browser even though the LM OS and Chro...
