Re: Local Redirect to 0.0.0.0 to block tracking, ads, bad sites, etc

OK, thanks, I thought that was the case. It must have been a program that I had before that would check and download updated lists to the hosts file. I do remember you could choose what list or lists it would use and would update regularly. If anyone has any idea of what that was, I sure would appre...

Re: Local Redirect to 0.0.0.0 to block tracking, ads, bad sites, etc

Thanks for your reply.

I can copy that list or others to make a new hosts file in /etc/hosts, but if I did that, wouldn't the list be static? If my memory is right, I remember an app/program that would automatically update the list once per day or so.

Local Redirect to 0.0.0.0 to block tracking, ads, bad sites, etc

When I was using Mint 17.3 in 2015, instead of having an ad blocker in my browser, I had a custom local host file for a redirect of bad sites, ads, etc to 0.0.0.0 instead of the address of the ad server or address of the bad site. It automatically updated the list from a site like this one (I think)...

Re: Linux Main OS For One of My Web Sites

I just checked the stats for February and before - it is more or less similar back for months. Not sure why this is.

Here is the February 2019 stats for the same site:

Linux Main OS For One of My Web Sites

I own a few websites, and I was just checking the Awstats on cPanel of one site in particular, and was surprised to see that the main OS for viewing my site is Linux. This particular site has nothing to do with computers or Linux. I don't know why Linux is the main OS, but I thought others might fin...

Re: CopyQ Applet Not Showing Icon (Solved - Workaround Found)

There is no "one button" way to clear the clipboard in CopyQ. You have to select all the content in the clipboard manually, then delete. Major oversight IMO. We are getting about a foot, but there is high wind and it is very cold so drifting. Snow is really nice when it is fresh and you don't have t...

Re: CopyQ Applet Not Showing Icon

Hey, thanks phd21 - it worked. The icon isn't the same, but who cares if it works! Funny that the Flatpak one is the one that doesn't work. What is it now - about the 10th time you've helped me fix an issue? Appreciate you taking your time to help me yet again. Hope you are enjoying your 75-78 degre...

Re: CopyQ Applet Not Showing Icon

Yes, it is in the startup apps.

I have also tried to launch it manually.

Just as an FYI, I tried installing Parcellite clipboard manager via the Software Manager to use in the mean time, and it works fine, and the icon is there.

CopyQ Applet Not Showing Icon (Solved - Workaround Found)

I have been using CopyQ for quite a while, and use it constantly. Withing the last few days the icon does not appear in the lower right of the panel as it always has, and therefore I can't use it. I have: 1- done a full restart: icon still not there 2- opened the System Monitor, go to Processes, and...

Re: Icon & Access to Program Issue

If that works, that would be great. I'll print out those instructions and next time I get a lockup (could be days - it does not happen often) I will try that. I will post back here with the results. Thank you for the suggestion.

Re: Question About Killing a Process

I had another lockup, and this time I experimented. If interested, I posted what I tried and the results here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=285795&p=1581877#p1581877

Re: Icon & Access to Program Issue

I had another lockup this morning, and now that I know a bit more, I experimented: When the system locks up, nothing works except I can move the mouse around and the mouse pointer moves on the screen. Right & Left click do nothing. First, I tried to just leave it for 10 minutes and see if it would r...

Re: Question About Killing a Process

OK thanks for that. I'm glad I asked, I won't try and kill VeraCrypt. I have 16GB of RAM in that computer which is a Dell Optiplex 7010 with an i7 & Samsung 500GB SSD. The system monitor shows I'm normally using about 12GB of RAM, which means I have about 4GB left free. I've thought about switching ...

Re: Question About Killing a Process

OK, what I mean by "loosing access" is best explained by my first question in this post: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=285795 What you both say about loosing data makes sense, and I understand that. What I don't want to do is mess up the system in some way. I'm not all that savvy...

Question About Killing a Process

Curious only - not a help question. If you loose access to a process (a program) for whatever reason, and you go to the "System Monitor" app that comes with Cinnamon, and you choose "Processes", then select the program and kill it - are there any negatives? I know that if you just turn off the the p...

Re: Icon & Access to Program Issue

Is it any different if you restart Cinnamon only (rather than the x-server) via Ctrl-Alt-Esc? Is it any different if you have indicator support on/off? Settings > General... I thought Ctrl-Alt-Backspace was just restarting Cinnamon, so thanks for letting me know about that. To be honest, I don't un...

Icon & Access to Program Issue

I honestly have no idea where to post this, so move to wherever you feel is appropriate. Once in a while, the system locks up while I'm working - I'm guessing it is Cinnamon because ctrl-alt-backspace works to get me back. No complaints because I really push the system hard with many programs runnin...

OK, I'm late to this party, but I'll just add my 2 cents and say xfe is amazing for certain uses. I use the included file manager in Cinnamon otherwise.

Good catch - I missed that. Bet you are right if the OS running inside VB isn't the issue.

Re: Not equally distributed CPU workload

Just in case .... the operating system that you are running in VB must be shut down for you to be able to make that change. If that is not the issue, you might want to ask the question on the VB forum section.
