Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

So I actually read what info they are gathering. I personally have no issue with what they want - actually it makes sense so they can know where to focus their efforts. I wouldn't even opt out - and I'm a privacy nut. You have to choose your battles IMO. There are far worse privacy issues regarding ...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

....... There are certainly some other distros that I like - Peppermint, Korora, Netrunner... but nothing that could get me to switch from Mint  I use Peppermint on my older laptop. Of all the Linus Distro's, it is a very close second to Mint Cinnamon IMO. It is lighter and faster on older...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

2001 with Mandrake - I was totally lost and kept using Windows for real work on my main computer. 2008 with Kubuntu - worked, sort of. Then an update caused the Blue Screen of Death. Went back to Windows. 2015 Happily using Windows 7, updated to Windows 10. I was horrified with Windows 10. Switched ...

Re: Update Manager Error

OK, so found what the software was causing the "colomboem" thingy mentioned above - it was a program called Dukto. I removed it, removed the line from the sources list and re-ran the Refresh on the update manger, and no more errors - BIG THANKS for helping.

Re: Update Manager Error

OK, thanks. I've removed the stable one. As you say, they do both have the exact same contents pointing to stable. After refreshing the update manager, I got this: W: Target Packages (main/binary-amd64/Packages) is configured multiple times in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list:1 and /etc/ap...

Re: Update Manager Error

Thanks.

Couple of questions.

Since I use the beta version of Chrome, should I do it the other way around and remove the Chrome stable list instead?

Also, what is Mint using these for? Does this just tell it where to download the latest versions, or check for latest, or what?

(Solved) Update Manager Error

I'm getting this error message every time I do any updates. Not sure what it means, but it does not seem to stop the update process. W: Target Packages (main/binary-amd64/Packages) is configured multiple times in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome-beta.list:3 and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-ch...

Re: How to Determine Meltdown & Spectre Vulnerability

If only the AV could distinguish between a test and a threat  Now you still don't know if your web browser is already not vulnerable. I did try it with Sophos turned off, and the test said I was "safe". Though, with FF57, I kind-of assumed so. This is a home/work computer, so I wasn't that wo...

Re: How to Determine Meltdown & Spectre Vulnerability

That link you provided triggered my Sophos AV within a second of the page loading. Nice to know the AV does its job.

Then this popped up when I clicked to run test:

Re: Signal Messenger

OK, so to update. I ended up using the software manager to remove Signal since it didn't launch, and tried using the code from Signal's home page to install via the terminal. It too did not work. As a person who came from Windows, I decided to try the Restart method when something doesn't work. Norm...

(Solved) Signal Messenger

I added Signal from the Software Manager - it's a Flatpack. It installed fine. When I click on it to open, nothing happens. Read up some documentation on Signal, and there was the suggestion to confirm I have APT. I checked, and do. I read a suggestion on the Ubuntu forum to " unset /tmp as noexec "...

Hey felemur--me too. I have almost a terabyte of big cat videos, documentaries, etc
I got my first digital camera in the year 2000 - a Polaroid of all things.

Anyway, as of now, I have over 11,000 pictures/movies on my hard drives - of my own cats!

Re: Net Neutrality

Anyone have any idea how / if this affects Canada?

I don't think it would mean anything, as Canada's CRTC is considered one of the best examples of corporate capture.

Re: Thunderbird Mail

Thunderbird is very useful. I have many e-mail accounts, and it allows me to keep an eye on them in one place and puts up notifications in Cinnamon when an email comes in. I read an article that stated mail programs like Thunderbird are not being used much anymore however. Their use peaked in the ea...
