Recovering applications using Snaptic Package Manager.

After a recent disaster, https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=295318 :( I'm trying to think of ways to make a recovery easier if it happens again. Some time ago I came across a a post referencing an option in Synaptic Package Manager to save the currently installed packages to a file. T...

Re: How can I create a new /home partition?

Disaster! Sort of. After receiving only one response by jglen490 (Thanks!) to my post, decided to strike out my own. Tried to experiment to see if I can solve it on my own. Mixed results. This is a retrace of my steps. Booted my laptop, plugged in my hybrid install external SSD into a USB port. I co...

Re: Clone Mint 18.3 Partition from dual old boot HD to new Virgin HD

I recently replaced my HDD with a new SSD in my laptop. See my post https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=290781&p=1612402#p1612402 I recommend a fresh install to your new drive. Probably save you a lot of time and headaches! Using Timeshift between versions, 18.3 to 19.x is not recommen...

How can I create a new /home partition? (Disaster?)

On my laptop I recently replaced my HDD with an SSD. Not being familiar with gparted, made a clean Mint 19.1 install using the 'Erase disk and install Linux Mint' option. The process was seamless, everything works. Using pbear's tutorial, Full Install to USB Drive: Four Options. https://forums.linux...

Re: Hardware specifications listing

Check out Hardinfo, available in the Software Manager. When installed it shows up in menu/admin/ as System Profiler and Benchmark. It shows a lot of stuff, more than I'll probably ever need.

Re: What use is learning the command line for someone new to Linux?

No need to explicitly learn linux commands but you shoul be able to use them when a responder to your post about a problem suggests a solution using them. The copy and paste method is the best way to enter them in terminal to minimize typo errors. It is a lot more efficient to use commands than usin...

Re: Flat 'Modern' GUI design and where it comes from (and reflections of Clems March 2019 blog post in relation to that)

It is all in the eye of the beholder. If I had a choice between Mint X, Mint Y and the one in the last two posts I would choose it.
What is it called?
Is there a way to get it?

Re: "Linux Mint Turns Cinnamon Experience Bittersweet"

My two cents worth on this subject. I don't think there is a perfect OS or desktop GUI for everyone. All have trade offs which users will have to make. I chose Linux Mint after windows discontinued support for win95. For myself it was the easiest way to transition to the linux environment. I haven't...

Re: Problems setting up Samba shared folders.

After more research turning off ufw in both machines will mount both of them. I can now transfer file as needed between them. I can live with this solution, but I'd prefer not having to turn ufw off every time I want transfer files. Need to to do more research on how to share with ufw on. If someone...

Re: Problems setting up Samba shared folders.

Thanks for your reply! Progress! But not working yet. Did as you suggested, renamed the laptop. Renamed shared files to Commond and Commonl. I can see the shared folder on the machine it was created on. Now I get this error on both machines when I try to mount the other machine in Network. Screensho...

Re: Problems setting up Samba shared folders.

Thanks for your reply altair4! After booting both PCs today ran sudo service smbd status It said on both machines samba is running. Perhaps the fresh boot started samba. On my laptop after opening the local network a folder labeled common on steve.local with a couple files that I put in it. On my de...

There is excellent tutorial by pbear in the Tutorials Forum. Used the Hybrid Method, it works with BIOS or UEFI. It boots just as fast as my interna...

Thanks for reply catweazel!
I also abandoned the idea of USB to USB port connections.
Absolute fear of letting the smoke that powers my machines escape from them.
Your reply also confirms my suspicions that it might also be very difficult to do so.

Problems setting up Samba shared folders. (Solved)

I have two PCs a desktop and laptop both running Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. My current configuration is desktop wired connection and laptop wifi. Thought of a USB connection to share files but that won't work. See post https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=294803 Decided to to use samba to shar...

Re: Is there a way to connect two PCs using USB ports?

Looks like a hard wire USB port method is not practical or maybe impossible.
Thanks to all who responded. I think I'll try the file sharing method. If I run into problems I'll make new post in the appropriate forum.
