Re: Linux is Not Windows

Mine can never remember her passwords, so I have to write them down for her in a book, then she cannot remember how to log in to things. I should have just converted her to Linux Mint and not told her, she probably would never have known the difference. MurphCID, maybe you can create a fake Windows...

Re: Tea or Coffee?

One of the things I miss and envy about Europe, is they have great beer, not the swill sold here that is best poured back in the horse it came out of and then bottled.

Re: Linux is Not Windows

I understand your frustration MurphCID, my Girlfriend-Unit has Linux installed on her computer. Works a lot better, really a lot better then when she had Windows installed. No errors whatsoever, besides her suspend function not working. The few complaints that she does have occasionally are all abo...

Re: Finally [SOLVED] no reboot or shutdown (a 6 month tale of woe with kernel 5)

Let me ask if I understand this correctly; if I turn off the "C" states, my Ryzen 1700 would run at its full 3.0 mhz all the time rather than throttling down when it is not really doing anything? This in turn would generate more heat, and therefore shorten the life of my processor or would it? Disa...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

I had to let the Spouse-Unit use my Linux laptop and she utterly freaked since "it was not windows, and she does not know how to use anything other than windows!" I patiently explained, it was just like windows in how it operated, she used it and complained the whole time. Sometimes we will never ge...

Mint 19.2 seems to be taking positive steps to making Linux look better. Next step Libre Office making their product look better.

Re: Tea or Coffee?

I use tap water as well. But I am still a shameless and hardened tea drinker. Enjoying a nice morning mug (20 oz) of Yunnan gold black tea brewed strong with some lemon and a little turbinado sugar.

I don't really care so much about screen size
Oh, crikey. I do.

Resolution: 3840x2160, 3840x2160
I do as well. I have two 1440p monitors on the desktop, and can't go back to anything other than 1080p for laptops.

Re: Finally [SOLVED] no reboot or shutdown (a 6 month tale of woe with kernel 5)

The Ryzen was and is working flawlessly. It was the Intel that was giving trouble. Cheers. Ah., thank you My pleasure. C-states are CPU power states., The CPU will successively invoke C-states to reduce power consumption. They are safe to turn off if you want your CPU running at full tilt, full tim...

Re: Finally [SOLVED] no reboot or shutdown (a 6 month tale of woe with kernel 5)

Please pardon my ignorance, but what are "C" states and why are they important to using Linux on an AMD system? I was running (albeit a short time) my AMD 1700 on an X370 mobo for a short time with no issues. So now I am worried that if I build a Ryzen system it will bork itself if I run Linux. The...

Re: Thinking about getting a new laptop...

I got this one for my wife. So far the Spouse-Unit loves it, and it seems to work one heck of a lot faster than her old one (which is now mine as a new Mint box) https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-x360-2-in-1-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-vega-10-256gb-ssd-sandblast...

I have been playing with it for a few days now, and it sure does appear that the fonts are better. I just wish Libre Office would sharpen/modernize their icons now.

Re: Linux Gaming

Valve wants to make changes to the Linux Kernel to make it better for gaming. This could be a good thing...or not? Yes, it's probably a good idea. But the Linux games themselves (and Linux video drivers) tend not to be as well optimized as the Windows equivalents so it's not enough really. I still ...
