Re: What ?

I highly doubt the Microsoft leadership is stupid enough to think the GNU+Linux community is going to embrace them, though I suppose there's a reasonable chance this is connected with their recent announcement to build their browser based around the Chrome browser core. Would I use it? Well, for an...

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint?

OMG I AM SO FED UP WITH WINDOWS! It took me all afternoon to get my daughters laptop updated to the latest windows build. And my other daughters Dell G7 gaming laptop. Now I am working on my spouse unit's AMD Ryzen 7 laptop, and it is taking freaking forever! Pain, agony, despair, thy name is Micros...

Re: Linux Gaming

I am so stoked that Baldur's Gate III is coming out, and I so hope the Steam has it available for Linux. I played the original, Version 2, and Icewind Dale for HOURS to the annoyance of my spouse-unit. One of my all time favorite games. We used to go into our offices on the weekends and build PCs, ...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

I am learning more on terminal commands, I did something today, and was really impressed how fast and easy it was. I used terminal to upgrade, update, and auto remove old kernels from my HP Spectre x360 machine. Really nice. I am becoming a Linux convert! I might actually try to do something else RS...

Re: New Laptop running Mint.

On my HP Spectre x360 and did sudo apt upgrade and WOW! upgraded everything, then sudo apt autoremove got rid of old kernels. I know this is old hat to many, but to me it was pretty darn interesting using terminal, and it was SO FAST! I feel like I have passed another milestone in my linux education.

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I do miss sometimes the Mandrake ability to chose different window managers at boot up. Mandrake had a great number of desktops from KDE through Gnome, through others. It was nice to try others.

Re: Observations on life

While I understand it is not a machine for the masses, even pros will have a hard time eating the cost of a fully spec'ed out machine when they can spend 1/5th of that and get so much more computing power. Like a 32 core Threadripper or 28 core Intel. A guy I work with is already trying to figure ou...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

I chose Linux because of Microsofts data collecting. I also deleted all the Google apps from my phone for the same reason. I don't have anything to hide, I just like my privacy. You and me both, brother or sister! I like the way you think. You'll do fine with Linux Mint, I'm sure. You've got the ri...

Yep "God Mode" is still available for Winders 10. https://www.howtogeek.com/402458/enable ... indows-10/ It gives you no more control over the deeper functions of Windows than what you can usually do with start menu.

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

The "funny" (more like "sad") part about this is that Microsoft tried to mitigate this by lowering the administrator account's permissions, administrators do no longer have access to files and folders owned by certain system accounts (you can still take ownership though). This reminded me of the "G...

Re: Observations on life

When Apple releases their newest "iWhatever" the media and iDrones go nuts. The new Mac Pro which has an 8 core Xeon, 32gb of ram, an AMD RX 580X, and 256gb of storage will fly off the shelves at a mere $5,999.99. For that amount of money, I can get a monster of a system using products on the shelf ...

Re: Tea or Coffee?

the military swore they would make me drink coffee! yuk! filthy brew that crap is. I like Tea, most any flavor will do. mostly though, my mornings start out with milk and cereal with buttered toast. I too, learned to drink coffee in the Army. Strong, deadly, black, and so full of caffine that you t...

Re: Tea or Coffee?

Coffee is my morning wake-me-up. Dark roast, black. Although I have been known to doctor it with a shot of Irish Cream. I am a bit surprised a Texican would consider tea as anything other than the "house wine." You do know the proper way to serve it is in a tall glass, over ice, with way to much su...
