Re: All Desktop Screenshots of 2024

Mint Xfce https://i.postimg.cc/kGwc0fxX/2024-01-04-15-10.png This is one of the most beautiful desktops I've seen. The icon set really matches the wallpaper well. Now that I am running multiple workspaces, I would like to try to replicate a version of this! By any chance do you still have links to ...

Re: my YouTube has been slowing down, .....

I keep getting blocked if the ad blocker is on, and that has been standard for a while, it started off as an annoyance then became painful. YT has been just stopping me from watching any video if I have an ad blocker enabled, so I open a private window and that works for now in Firefox. I added Ad G...

Re: CPUs some better than others

Agreed, the new Intel chips are reportedly blowtorches, and must be water cooled. My current desktop on the Windows machine is a Ryzen 1700 at 65 watts TDP, and it works just great. AMD's latest AM5 CPU's are regular blast furnaces (and AMD claims they can run at 95°C all the time; I don't buy it) ...

Re: Odd Thelio Error

Since I made the correction in BIOS, everything is working great. In fact I am spending more time with the Thelio than previously. Thanks to all, and now that I have it the way I want it to "look and feel" it is even better.

CPUs some better than others

Is it not funny how some CPUs seem to be better than others for no real quantifiable reason? I love AMD chips, I have two of the 8 core Ryzen chips in my two desktops one running Windows, the other Linux. Both are great. BUT AMD 6 core chips (6 or 12) seem to have that "special sauce" that...

Re: New to Linux, trying to understand the playing field

#1 I HAVE a grey beard, so I am a member of the "club" #2 You do not have to use the terminal, it is there if you need it. #3 I am in the same boat you are. A good suggestion, is if you have one, or can get one, get a "beater" laptop and install different distributions, and just ...

Re: Windows 10 EOL

Not going to work since my PC "does not meet the specs" for Windows 11 despite it being an 8 core Ryzen 1700 system with 32 gb of ram. So I will just use Windows 10 till the computer dies.

Re: Malware in xz (but don't panic: not in your Mint)

And from reading the posts it looks like a number of "posters" just suddenly appeared supporting this hack. Looks like a State Actor or Large Corporation to me... But fairly sophisticated and it could have been really bad.

Re: Odd Thelio Error

I did, and they had me run Memtest. I think what it needed was to do a bios reset after the bios update since it is a Gigabyte motherboard. So far everything is running pretty well.

Re: In cold sweat I stared at my screen....

HA! I have had similar moments where you think; "OMG! What happened, and how am I going to fix this...?" The cold sweat, the moment of sheer panic, the desire to go and run in circles. Yep, been there, done that. Happened once, when I thought I was just "updating" my windows inst...

The future looks bright indeed :D
Newer kernels are actually good for not-so-new(ish) hardware too, as they have improved performance in many areas.
I am getting really jazzed by what I am reading on Mint 22. It looks to be a very solid release.

Re: Mint 22 open thread

I am highly excited after reading the latest blog post by Clem. Mint 22 looks like it is going to be a real winner! Now I have no idea what Deb822 really is, since I read the post and the link and did not understand what it did or what it was supposed to do. As for Mint (and Linux) it already is so ...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

Tapes (reel to reel) vs 8 track vs Cassette, vs CD. I had them all at one point. My dad gave me an old reel to reel player, and I made tapes of my favorite albums for it. Had an 8 track in the car until it got replaced by a Cassette and later a CD player. Monitors= Green and black, Orange and black,...

Re: Odd Thelio Error

Ok, pulling the two extender cables from the back of the computer, and doing a BIOS reset to "Load Optimized defaults" seems to have cleared up the issue for some absolutely unknown reason. I submitted two trouble tickets, and have yet to hear back from System 76 at all.

Re: Odd Thelio Error

Thanks! The only things I have plugged into the USB ports are the rodent, the keyboard, and two extension cables to run the USB-C and one USB-A port around to the front of the system. It is annoying as all get out, AND I have not yet heard from System 76.

Odd Thelio Error

Twice today, I booted the Thelio and it took almost a minute to get to the splash screen, then it just hung on the screen that shows ESC F12 Del at the bottom. The system was completely updated, firmware up to date, and this error is happening more and more often. I had to hard power off the system ...
