Re: Now this is exciting for me- Winamp

I currently use Rhythmbox since it does a good enough job, and I just want a music player. I am looking at Qmmp since it has replaced Xmmp, and sometimes I just want something that plays music, not videos, just music. On Windows I use iTunes since I have so much on the iPod.

Now this is exciting for me- Winamp

https://news.itsfoss.com/winamp-open-source/ It looks like Winamp, which I used for years as an audio player is coming back as open source. This makes me happy.

Re: Youtube Downloader

It has always amazed me at the discussions you will get when a simple, fast and efficient GUI program like Video Downloader (available in software manager) is used as opposed to a terminal using a half dozen arcane commands that the average user would never know about just to save a video of their ...

Family & Friends stopped ringing us - as the House Phone - was always engaged. You never had a member in the household who figured out you could interrupt an online session that was "protected" by disabling call waiting? I found that picking up the phone in another room and pressing l...

That is a very good question. I am not sure, but I suspect if you have a back yard, you can set up a table, chair and umbrella and enjoy? Hmmmm, I need to get a table for outside so I can go enjoy a nice cup and some computer time outside in the mornings.

Dial-up :) with an 300 baud modem  it was "fun" watching those 'lines' move ermm slowly accross the screen. then later on, with an 2400 modem & it was "fun" watching those 'lines' move downwards on the screen. I still remember the fun of sending things back and forth ...

Your first connection....

How did you first discover and connect to the Internet? I had a second hand 1200 baud modem which was given to me, and installed in my old Zenith Z-151 8088 system, and I discovered dial up, the joy of Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem, and Kermit. I also discovered at $300 phone bill, which almost caused my w...

Re: When did you start to realize Linux will never become the future of desktop computing?

Well there is Haiku OS, which is the old BeOS from the past. It seems to becoming more stable, and functional. There are also all the various *BSD offerings such as FreeBSB, OpenBSD, and NetBSD to name a few. They are not nearly as up to date as your average Linux distribution on new hardware, but t...

Re: Canonical (Ubuntu)

While I will disagree with some of the decisions that Canonical has made, let us not forget that Canonical (Ubuntu) made Linux something other than a geek/nerd OS, by allowing normal people to install, and actually use Linux right out of the box. After my self enforced hiatus from Linux due to issue...

I am one of those who shut down when I am done, on all the computers. I find sleep/hybernate causes the occasional glitch. I like having HTOP open since it shows usage of cpu/ram.

Re: Unreasonable hate for Ubuntu

On the one side I respect your opinion. Some of you guys are really experienced Linux users. However, what I might find interesting is that even though in my post I talked about forced flatpaks over .rpm in fedora which resembles with forced snaps over .deb in ubuntu. You guys shared some good insi...

What do you do when you boot up?

There are certain things I just do automatically when I boot up my Linux computers, and it has become a habit, does anyone else do things somewhat as a habit when they boot their systems?

I do the following:

1) Open a terminal
2) Open HTOP
3) Check for updates.

Re: Unreasonable hate for Ubuntu

I don't "hate" Ubuntu, I just disagree with some of the directions that they are taking which, to my mind, are pro-corporate, and Anti-FOSS to some degree. Some links that discuss the change in Ubuntu: https://itsfoss.com/newsletter/foss-weekly-24-18/ https://news.itsfoss.com/kubuntu-24-04/
