Re: WiFi stopped working: Dell XPS

Ah, thanks both administrollaattori and JeremyB for clarifying what's going on. After another reboot this morning, wifi is working as if nothing was ever wrong. I'm still seeing the same noise from ath10k_pci during startup, but wifi is up and running. 10:13 john@john:~$ dmesg | grep -i "ath10k\|err...

WiFi stopped working: Dell XPS [solved]

After the latest kernel update, I lost wifi. There seems to be quite a few more "lost wifi" posts cropping up, on realtek and broadcom cards. Mine is an Atheros. The wifi tray widget does show the wireless card, but clicking to enable it does nothing. Screenshot from 2019-06-04 12-16-33.png 12:12 jo...

Cinnamon crash loses d-bus session?

I've started connecting an ASUS MB169B+ 15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 IPS USB Portable Monitor to my Dell XPS 15 via DisplayPort, so now I have three screens. This works pretty great. However if I suspend without switching off the ASUS monitor, Cinnamon comes up blank; i.e. all my GUI programs died, thoug...

How come Cinnamon gets updates for mate-panel, mate-polkit?

I'm running Mint with Cinnamon 3.4.6, but the update manager is offering me updates for mate-panel and mate-polkit.
Are these `mate-` components not mate-specific?

Re: [Solved] Boot partition is full

I got the same thing: kernel install failed because `/boot` full. On top of this, the way it's handled by Mint is disappointing: - the failed kernel doesn't show up in the list of upgrades any more. I.e. the install took a nosedive, leaving the system in an undefined state, silently. - manually runn...

Re: Per-monitor UI scaling?

I have the same type of issue. At the moment I'm setting my HiDPI laptop display to the same resolution as the lower-res monitor.
At least it switches back to HiDPI (with some glitches about mouse cursor size and the size and spacing of systray icons) when I unplug the external monitor.

LightDM using 100% CPU *when switched to other user*

When I switch user to another user on my laptop, the fan starts going crazy. Turns out it's lightdm using 100% CPU. Does anyone else see this? Googling turns up many hits on lightdm pegging the CPU, but nothing here at Mint or about the switched-user issue. System: Kernel: 4.10.0-27-generic x86_64 (...

Mint 18.2: using FHD external monitor with HiDPI laptop

Hi all I have an external 24" screen with a 1920x1080 resolution, and a laptop with a 3140x2860 resolution. I need to use User Interface Scaling to get a usable display on the laptop, but not on the external screen. So far, trying to use the two screens together at native resolution fails. - The Cin...

Re: Print screen and buggy keyboard shortcuts

I found that on random times, PrtSc does work, just like Alt+F2 as I mentioned before, but only randomly Does `gnome-screenshot --window` from a terminal work for you? For me it fails with a segfault, or, just now: $ gnome-screenshot -w *** Error in `gnome-screenshot': free(): invalid next size (no...

Re: Print screen and buggy keyboard shortcuts

Hmm. This is a red herring! Check this out:

Code: Select all

john@john ~ $ gnome-screenshot --window
Segmentation fault
Description of problem: running `gnome-screenshot --window` in a X11 Window Manager other than Gnome Shell (ex: fluxbox) causes a SegFault

Re: Print screen and buggy keyboard shortcuts

I'm running into something similar. I switched to a new laptop (Dell XPS 15) and new release (18.2, was 17). Now `Alt-PrtScr` does nothing (it used to work fine). Just `PrtScr` works fine. When I tried to play with remapping the keyboard shortcuts in the control panel, `Alt-PrtScr` showed up as `Alt...

That sounds like more or less the same result as what I'm doing now (restarting WiFi at the office).

It looks like this is the bug tracking it: Bug 765831 - Wifi fails to resume from standby

Re: Setting up fast SSD as cache for slow HDD

Thank you Reorx and marlenejo for your answers. It sounds like putting the OS on the SSD would be a good idea. Actually I didn't realize that would make a big difference --- I thought that it would be swapping data more than code. I'm regularly 3 or 4GB into swap (mainly because of running multiple ...

Setting up fast SSD as cache for slow HDD

Hi all I have a Thinkpad X250 which came with a slow 1TB HDD and a little 16GB SSD. I'd like to follow these steps: Using LVM’s new cache feature in order to speed up the slow HDD using the SSD as cache. Has anyone done this? Is there perhaps a writeup of how to do this with Mint? I notice that this...

Network Manager sticks with old network

- I'm connected to `homewifi`. - I suspend and go to the office, 10km away. - NetworkManager thinks I'm still connected to `homewifi`, though networks at the office are listed. In order to connect to an office network, I need to `sudo service network-manager restart` or switch wireless on/off in `nm...

Re: Sticky Windows after suspend/screen saver for dual monitors

I just realised that I hadn't been experiencing all of this. My windows got bumped back to the laptop screen after the external monitor was unplugged, but not after screen lock. For some reason, now it's happening after screen lock also! System: Host: X250 Kernel: 3.19.0-32-generic x86_64 (64 bit) D...

Fail to suspend on lid close

This morning my laptop failed to suspend again (so it's having a heat meltdown when I remove it from my backpack). I suspect it might be because I was logged in as a second user at the same time (i.e. I "switched user" without logging out the first user). The only reason for my suspicion at this poi...
