Yes, that's the bit I was hoping xed (or alternatively some other GUI editor) could be made to do automatically

Re: xed - save shell scripts with execute permission set
When you open a bash script that is executable in xed and then do a Save-As, the resulting file is not executable. No, if you edit an executable file, it stays executable. This is about creating a new document. I was hoping there'd either be a tick-box somewhere in the save dialog to say "make...

xed - save shell scripts with execute permission set
Hello When saving a shell script that has been written in xed, is it possible to make it save with the execute attribute set? Otherwise, every time I write a script and save it, I have to go back to nemo or the terminal to change the permissions. (Note, I tried to see if this had been asked before, ...

Re: Web Apps with Firefox Add-ons?
Is there any way to make all web apps share same extensions? I don't think so. Reason is that each web app has its own separate Firefox profile. You can find these profiles in ~/.local/share/ice/firefox. This is a good thing for privacy as it means that cookies and other such tracking information i...

Re: Issues with (re-) log in, after "suspend"
Hi mottechy Here's the detail of my solution. Worth a try? First, go into Menu - Preferences - Power Management, and set "When lid is Closed" to "Do nothing". Second, create a script file. Change the filename and location to suit you. $ nano ~/mylock Copy & paste the followin...

Agreed, cessanfrancisco. I've spent a long time setting up Mint the way I want it, and would prefer not to have to do it all again on a fresh install

Re: Issues with (re-) log in, after "suspend"
I had this problem on 18.2, after searching and asking, no real solution was found. I produced a workaround in the end, it requires a bit of command line fiddling to set up, and means you have to click an icon to suspend instead of just shutting the lid. Suits me fine now i have got used to it, and ...

If any other info would help with debugging...

What does the hard drive LED show whilst it is frozen? Is the hard drive thrashing away?
If so, this might help.

Re: Problem with resume from suspend, 18.2 Cinnamon
Resurrecting an old thread here, but I'm still having problems with suspend and resume. I've tried a variety of kernels and am now on the most recent one offered in the update manager. All give me problems when resuming from suspend, say three times out of five I have to CTRL-ALT-Backspace and log i...

Re: Problem with resume from suspend, 18.2 Cinnamon
Hi kyphi
Thanks for the suggestion, sorry I seemed to ignore it, as the forum didn't give me a notification.
I had actually rolled back from 4.10.something to 4.8.something to see if it helped. I will try going forward again to the most recent and see what happens.

Problem with resume from suspend, 18.2 Cinnamon
Hi, Lately I have been having trouble with resuming after suspend (when I lift the laptop lid). instead of the lock screen, I can see the desktop as I left it. I can use the touchpad to move the mouse around, but can't click on anything or type anything. I can only Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to return to th...

Re: evolution-indicator not appearing
I found a solution that seems to work for me on Mint 18.1 Cinnamon, I can't see why it wouldn't also work on MATE. install this: sudo apt-get install mail-notification-evolution Go into evolution, Edit menu -> Plugins, and make sure "Jean-Yves Lefort Mail Notification" is ticked Close the ...

[SOLVED]Re: Suspend not working on Cinnamon
I solved the problem. In case anyone else is interested, it involved changing some parameters using the "gsettings" command, as detailed in this thread:

[SOLVED] Suspend not working on Cinnamon
Hello I've been using Mate happily for a while and recently switched to Cinnamon desktop (same installation, nothing else changed). In cinnamon, the laptop does not Suspend when the lid is closed, whereas it did so in Mate. I have checked the settings in Preferences/Power, this is set to "suspe...

MTP access to Sony Xperia android phone
Hello I'm having trouble connecting my phone (Xperia Z3 Compact) to the computer for data transfer. I also have a Nexus 7, which works fine, so I'm trying to work out the difference. Both are on Android 6 Marshmallow, and new in this version, you have to select MTP transfer every time it is plugged ...

Re: What is using the network connection?
Thanks for the quick reply Xenopeek.
The 2KB/s transfer doesn't seem to be happening at the moment, but I've downloaded and run nethogs and it looks like it will be able to reveal the culprit next time it happens.
Much appreciated,
Andy.

What is using the network connection?
Hello all, I am using Mint 17.2 (Mate) on a Dell latitude laptop. With no programs running on the desktop, system monitor shows approx 2KB/s and 500B/s download and upload respectively, more-or-less continuously. Neither system monitor nor "top" it seems will show me which programs are usi...
