Hard disk fail (error 303), but Linux Mint still works?

Hi, I have a problem with the laptop of my wife (HP Pavilion dv7-6c series). The hard drive seems corrupted, isn't detected anymore by Windows 10 installer, even after using GParted (on bootable USB) or diskpart on the command prompt. But when I try to install Linux Mint, there seems no problem: the...

Re: Printscreen / Shutter doesn't work in VirtualBox LM18

Went back to 17.3.

Problem solved. Well, not really, but for the moment. 18 is a little buggy to me. I'll wait to 18.1...

Printscreen / Shutter doesn't work in VirtualBox LM18

I recently installed LM18 Cinnamon in a VirtualBox under Windows 10 on my working PC. Under 17.3, printscreen/ Shutter did work and I even could paste it in the Windows host (which was more the other way around). Now, it gives a black screen. When I want to use a selection, it shows text saying to d...

Re: [SOLVED]Cinnamon crashed, running in fallback mode

Most likely reason for wrong ownership is wrong usage of sudo. As a general rule: Never(!) run any graphical program with sudo, but only via gksudo. No exception to this! Wrong usage of sudo can lead to several problems, in the worst case are not even able to log into your account. I did this, so y...

Re: Cinnamon crashed, running in fallback mode

:?

It was THAT easy? Now I feel embarrassed...

Yeah, it worked. No more fallback mode, I lost my desktop wallpaper and color theme, but I can get over this tragic loss
Gedit works again, just like nemo.

What could have caused the problem?

Anyway, many thanks!!!

[SOLVED]Cinnamon crashed, running in fallback mode

On my personal account (and only mine, the rest of the family has no problems, so it is not a hardware issue but has to to with personal settings) I get this error every time I log in. Since this is not a hardware issue, I had no help from all the threads who adviced to reinstall device drivers like...

Re: Can't connect to Windows (USB) printer

Finally found the solution... Silly as always. When entering my user/pass the first time (when looking for a printer on a specific IP address) I filled in my Microsoft account (f.i. name@domain.com). This gave me access to my Windows PC (username: name, domain: domain.com, pass), I chose my printer,...

Re: Gparted & K Partition Manager crash when resizing partit

Gparted Live CD works... This is not a solution... Starting a new VM each time I have to adjust partitions is just plain inefficient.

Is it possible Gparted and Partition Manager are front ends for the same program? Parted f.i.?

Gparted & K Partition Manager crash when resizing partition

I try to resize a FAT32 partition with GParted and KDE Partition Manager on a bootable USB stick. Both crash without a warning on 2 different computers (1 virtual machine LM Mate, 1 real device LM Cinnamon). The crash occurs when I apply the changes. There are a lot of topics on this one , but not o...

Re: Can't install Linux Mint on old computer

OK, I tried LM Mate, at the end the installation was aborted. Ditto LM XFCE. Lubuntu did the trick... Not my cup of tea LXDE, but it works enough for my mother. Did not find the solution... I assume it was something with grub, but not sure. What happens at the end of the installation that could be a...

YUMI doesn't work: asks for sudo password

I'm trying to make a bootable USB stick with several distributions on it. For this purpose I downloaded YUMI from pendrivelinux. Unfortunately, it asks for a sudo password. I give it in and am 100% sure it's the right one. YUMI says it's not... I mean... Do I really have to move all these iso files ...

Re: Can't install Linux Mint on old computer

"why it didn't work? The kernel?" Yes, the kernel. Editing the boot arguments to replace quiet splash with nomodeset nolapic would be my #1 suggestion...I don't have a second suggestion because #1 has always worked for me. My 32-bit Mint never needs more than 512MiB RAM. My 64-bit Mint never needs ...

Re: Can't install Linux Mint on old computer

I would also blow out the innards and disconnect the hard drive and clean the connections and change the CMOS battery. That last part is what I would be sure to do right away. Also, I would take the RAM out and re-seat it. This definitely sounds like a hardware issue and not an OS issue. Why does U...

Re: Installing VirtualBox in Linux Mint 17.1 Cimmamon

I noticed on 17.3 version number of VB is 5. I think on 17.1 it was still 4. So why not upgrade to 17.3 and then installing it from the software manager?

Can't install Linux Mint on old computer

I had an embarrasing problem... My mother complained she got plenty of warnings on her Ubuntu 10.10 desktop. Of course, she did never upgrade and now the repositories are outdated and no longer supported. I did an upgrade to 11.04 but after that I got a blank screen after startup. Already not in the...

Re: Can't connect to Windows (USB) printer

Re: Can't connect to Windows (USB) printer

I can connect my VM Linux Mint to the USB. Guest additions are installed. The moment I assign the USB device "Brother HL-5150D" to the guest, it autodetects my printer, installs the driver and everything works perfect. Why do I want to access my printer as a shared printer? Simply because it's not c...
