Re: need help to reach university internal network using vpn

Thanks for posting the logfile. I'm by no means an expert with Linux (and I don't use L2TP), so I'm just kind of making stabs in the dark here. I did some Googling for the error "This binary does not support kernel L2TP" and I haven't come up with anything super helpful. Hopefully someone here can h...

Re: Help with Locale Settings

Can you give us a little more info about what version of Mint you're using? Version number and desktop environment/window manager? I'm running 17.2 Cinnamon, and it's just a matter of going to your Language Settings and then under Region, choosing something like English, United States as your region...

Re: need help to reach university internal network using vpn

I think in the default install, only PPTP is supported, so you may have to install other packages to make L2TP work. Maybe you could try installing the l2tp-ipsec-vpn package(s) and see if that gives you what you need? I would think that would do it. Also, this thread may be helpful: http://forums.l...

Re: OpenSUSE Leap and Fedora Workstation

Well, I did give the Fedora live USB a spin and I have to say I mostly really like the Gnome interface. I love the Activities screen, the overview of what's currently going on in your computer and all that. I've since discovered 'Toggle Scale' on the Cinnamon desktop, which does kind of the same th...

You could try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. I don't use Chrome, so I don't know if it's even in the repositories. How did u install it?

Re: Choppy streaming playback, Netflix and Amazon

Sorry for the late reply...I've been busy. Your graphics card is pretty vanilla and shouldn't require any specific drivers. Is your BIOS the most current version? Or is there some Intel firmware update you can apply? You could also try going into the BIOS and seeing if you can increase the amount of...

Re: Hybrid SSD / HDD Installation & boot

If you installed Mint on the SSD, it should be making use of the SSD to boot.

Can you give us a run-down of your partition layout?

Re: Keeps returning to logon screen after logging in

I found some method to save the output of the command into a text file, but it didn't work. Is there any other methods to save the output? No need to save it. Just use your mouse to copy/paste it from the terminal into your next forum message. It's not in a virtual machine, how can i do that? Huh? ...

Are you running the Netflix Desktop app through Wine?

If so, this link below might help. Actually, the method they mention might just help anyway.

Re: Choppy streaming playback, Netflix and Amazon

I see you have 2 GB of RAM and a standard video card that looks like it probably shares system RAM. Have you tried comparing the RAM and CPU usage when you're using Youtube versus when you're streaming from Netflix or Amazon? You can use the 'top' command and the 'free -h' command to make those comp...

I'm a semi-noob, too. Welcome to the club. :) It will be helpful if you can provide some more info for the experts, though. Can you paste the output of the below command here in this thread? inxi -Fz It'll also be helpful to paste the contents (or at least relevant lines) of /var/log/syslog here. Ho...

Re: Swap cannot be encrypted on install

So you have 2 HDDs? The 250GB drive is only the OS (/boot and / partitions?) and a 1TB drive for /home and /swap? Is that correct? If that's the case, you could always just shrink the size of the encrypted partition mounted as /home, leaving at least 16GB (which you'll probably never use fully) in s...

Have you tried Googling Linux and Macbook Pro? There are quite a few tutorials online dealing with getting Linux to work on those machines. I just ran across one earlier today.

Re: How to change Computer Name in Mint 17.2

Changing your username is a lot more involved than changing your screen name. For info on how to do it, see the link below: http://askubuntu.com/questions/34074/how-do-i-change-my-username It actually might be less hassle if you just create a new user and copy the contents of your home directory to ...

Re: How to change Computer Name in Mint 17.2

What do you mean by "so that nothing gets messed up"? The process is as follows: 1.) (in a command prompt): sudo nano /etc/hostname (Change the name to what you WANT it to be) 2.) (in a command prompt): sudo nano /etc/hosts (Change the name in there to the one you want it to be) 3.) Restart the comp...

Did you check out the links in my previous post yet and try anything from those? And can you verify whether or not you have a software firewall running on your machine? Re: Can't connect to a network that asks for credentials

Sorry, I'm not a great troubleshooter with Linux [yet]. I've toyed with it off and on since about 2000 and only recently went full-on Linux, so I'm kinda stuck here as to what your issue is. :( As for the ping problem...You can't ping anything even when you're connected to a network? Or just when yo...

Re: Can't connect to a network that asks for credentials

It looks like your wireless card is a Broadcom card? Have you tried installing the Broadcom drivers for it? If you're unsure, open Driver Manager and see if it lists any proprietary drivers there. If not, you may want to download them from the Software Center or via apt-get in a terminal. That may v...
