I can't speak for the DVD, however I have an HP all-in-one desktop that I am able to use secure boot with Rafaela 17.2 Cinnamon or Mate with a USB. i'd suggest maybe getting a thumb drive if you have one lying around and making a bootable USB so you can install Mint. It's also faster than the DVD.
I have an HP all-in-one and I have been successful on updating the bios. Just so I can give you proper instructions can you tell me the model of your laptop? Because I want to help you with this because I went through kind of the same headache.

If I am not mistaken, YouTube inside Mozilla Firefox on Linux Mint 17.2 should automatically default to HTML5 playback. Otherwise I would suggest going to http://www.youtube.com/HTML5 to force it to use HTML5 when available.

Have you tried going to Menu > Administration > Driver Manager to see if a non-free driver is needing to be enabled for the USB 3.0? I would also check your UEFI/BiOS settings to see if the USB 3.0 ports are enabled for the OS to use. Please let me know if this works for you first.
