Re: Is it possible to change the name of a home directory?

Any particular reason you want to change your home directory name? I didn't want to, but I can't access my usual home directory. I've run out of ideas how to fix that problem. There's no problem working as a different user with a different home directory but I need my usual login name to be able to...

Is it possible to change the name of a home directory?[Solved]

I know it's possible to use mv to rename the directory, but very complicated things are sure to happen with file ownership. I've screwed up the settings in my usual home directory and I can't figure out what needs fixing using the console. There's no problem with logging on with another user name --...

Have a look here viewtopic.php?f=90&t=295325 if you used the Displays application from the menu.
That probably works with Cinnamon. I'm using KDE which has quite different menus.

How to change screen resolution without X

Check for ~/.xprofile I didn't find any mention of ~/.xprofile. I found some files in the ~/.kde/share/config directory that seem to mention resolution definitions, files such as plasma-desktop-appletsrc but it was not obvious what their intentions were. I tried deleting the (to me) confusing secon...

Re: How to change screen resolution without X

jp734 » Fri Jun 14, 2019 3:12 am You can try creating a script for your xrandr command and save it under your /home_folder/.config/autostart I tried that, (thanks for the suggestion) but it didn't get round the problem. It seems to be bypassed somehow. I thought it might be a hardware issue, However...

How to change screen resolution without X

My screen resolution changed suddenly and in my efforts to fix it, I've screwed up the X display. I wanted to use xrandr to reset it to something useful but it needs an X display. There must be a configuration file somewhere that could be edited, but I can't guess where and what it could be. My syst...

Re: What could have screwed up my sendmail config?

by deepakdeshp » Wed May 29, 2019 4:56 pm Mint 17 is out of support now . Better to make a fresh install of 19.4 after backing up your data. I take it you mean 19.1. I have the /home/ directory backed up, but I need to know how sendmail should be configured. In any case, I'd like to know how those ...

Re: Where did the rest of the keyboard shortcuts go in 18.3?

Never use KDE, but 18.3 Cinnamon has all of the standard keyboard shortcuts that were/are popular in the Windows OS.... IMHO, Windows shortcuts are far too limited for my liking of customizing. It doesn't do what KDE allows so there can't be a shortcut for it . IMO, all shortcuts should be standard...

.... Under System Settings, Workspace/Shortcuts, and on the Global Shortcuts page (with KDE 4 its Common Appearance and Behavior/Shortcuts and Gestures). Raise and Lower Window are under KWin (Other Shortcuts). They were easier to find on KDE 5 than with KDE 4 where you had to select KWin on the KD...

Re: Where did the rest of the keyboard shortcuts go in 18.3?

Alt + middle mouse button is toggle raise/lower (configured as a Window Action). You can configure other Actions in Window Manager Settings (accessible from the window menu > More Actions). That doesn't work on my installation. However , I fleetingly found a place where I could set shortcuts under ...

Help me out here; which Linux Mint version are you on?
I'm getting used to Linux Mint 18.3, trying to get the shortcuts I used in 17.3 to work. But I can't work out where or if they are still part of KDE 5.x

Where did the rest of the keyboard shortcuts go in 18.3?[Solved]

The keyboard shortcuts have been largely redesigned in LM 18.x c.f. LM17.x and I can't find many that I liked to use. In particular, I use 'raise window' and 'lower window'. I like the active window to stay behind by default -- particularly if it's a konsole window -- and raised when I want it, so I...

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options

Could it be different for installing KDE? Turns out, yes. That's why it's important to include such information in the OP, so folks don't waste their time answering the wrong question. It never occurred to me that the difference using KDE came into effect at that early stage. Decisions are made as ...

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options

Too late now, I suppose, but what you should have used Tuxkid was the "Something Else" method. That's where you'll find the options you describe. I don't recall seeing "Something Else" Why would I make this up? In fact, the Installation Type screen is the same for both: I wasn't inferring that you ...

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options

No, that's not the new way of doing things (also 18.3 is not new, but okay). Can you post a screenshot of the HD in GParted? Is there any free space? If there is no free space, you will not be offered the option to install alongside. I've only ever used GParted from a boot disk, but this shows I ha...

Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options

I've used LM 17.3 for a long time and wanted to install 18.3 on the same disk. However, I found no options that responded. There was a screen that looked like it gave options, but clicking boxes had no effect. In the end, I could only install to the whole disk and format (i.e.) destroy everything on...

I've never had that problem but I found a way that deals with flakiness is to use kquitapp plasma-desktop All your windows will lose their borders and the like, but you get them back when you restart the gui. plasma-desktop That could take some time and it might look like it's not finishing but afte...

Re: [Solved] /boot partition has no space.

Shouldn't be a problem. Did you get that post-removal script error message again though? That was the immediate thing I wanted to fix with those commands. If you didn't, then you should now be able to remove the remaining kernel packages via Synaptic. We'll clean up whatever is left manually afterw...
