Re: Update manager error

Is it possible that the update manager was itself doing its automatic checking for updates, at the same time?

Re: 19.2 buggy ?

No, user settings are generally under home. I have brought my old home partition along from 17.3 32-bits to 18.1 64-bits and pretty much all settings I had tweaked followed me to my new version of Mint with very few and small problems (2, duplicate programs, easily fixed). Now this same partition ho...

I know I can find anything findable with Google; that's not the case with DDG. When I'm looking for images, as just one example, I've yet to find anything even as good as, much less better than, Google's search system.
And have you tried Startpage.com?

I'd move the SSD. I see no reason why that would not be a good idea.

https://www.dolmanlaw.com/motorcycle-accidents-vs-car-accidents/ Not sure why you are telling me this. All bikers realise, if they have an ounce of common sense, that riding a motorcycle comes with inherent risks which are considerably higher than those associated with driving a car. And bikers who...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

One thing the author of the linked 2006 article is "right" about - Windows was like a car( = stable and safe to drive on ) and Linux was like a motorbike( = less stable and less safe or more dangerous to ride on ) Do you consider Windows to be inherently safer than Linux-based OSses? That's a new o...

Re: 19.2 buggy ?

If your home is a separate partition (not a directory inside of root), you can simply leave it unformatted* during a reinstallation and bring pretty much all of your tweaks along. Saves tons of time and is pretty safe.

*and also make a backup of it before you start, just in case

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

I use the Ikea homepage as a benchmark: Interesting thought, is that because of all the graphics or the coding? I'd not have considered it as any more demanding than many other pages. It isn't. It's a good example of a pretty normal modern webpage. It would not make a good benchmark if it were more...

Re: How To Install MS Calibri Font In Libre Office

The easy way to download and install a font: - Download the .ttf file for the font. - Open the font that now resides in youre download folder. It should open in Font Viewer. - Click on Install. That's it. That's all. Once it's installed, it should also appear in Libre Office; there is no need (and a...

Crippled, if you meet so many people driving on the wrong side of the road, it makes sense to consider whether you are actually the one driving on the wrong side. People are not 'lying to you' if they say something that you perceive as wrong. You're not acting in your own best interest, and i...

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

And a modern web browser is needed to interact with the modern web. I use the Ikea homepage as a benchmark: if that won't render or brings either the browser or the OS to their knees, I consider the machine to be unsuitable for any realistic purpose. Are horse wagons still usable? In and of themselv...

I warned her not automate her passwords for banking etc. I must remind myself of checking that she really did NOT automate her banking accounts logins on her laptop.
Most banking websites don't allow it. And that's a good thing.
