I am old.
Impossible... that would mean I'm old too, and that can't possibly be true!
Welcome, sounds to me like you'll fit right in here. :)

Re: Newbie here. Can't log into Linux after careless use of "chown" commnand

I don't know what you think it means, it means I'm hoping you'll have a good solution, is all. But how bad can it be? I mean, a backup-and-reinstall is not a disaster... especially if you can copy your home directory. And I don't see any reason why you couldn't. Indicentally, this is a reason why so...

That was the link to the page with the image, not to the image, but I've fixed that for you. Good luck!

Put it on the net somewhere (there's tons of free image hosters) and post the direct link to the image here, enclosed in rimg tags.

Re: Panel Pop Ups - How to Disable?

That preview is a feature of the 'window list' applet. Here's how you turn it off: - Rightclick on one of the buttons on your panel. The large ones, for programs that are running. - Click on 'Preferences' in the pop-up menu. - Choose 'Configure...' - On the settings window for the 'window list' appl...

It's really not a question of trust.
Oh, in a way it is. You can trust Facebook to slurp up as much of your data as they possibly can, and to sell it to the highest bidder.

Cinnamon 18.3....Don't know what desktop environment means...a PC? In your case, Cinnamon is the desktop environment. If you only want to take a picture of the screen, the PrtSc key will do that. If you want a picture of a part of the screen, holding Shift and tapping PrtSc briefly will turn the cu...

Try it out from an USB stick, and you'll know more. You can disable animations and such things, it helps.

Re: Please suggest me an OS, too

I'd take Mint 18.3 XFCE for a spin and see how it performs. The SSD should help a lot and 2GB should be enough. Still, if you're interested in trying Lubuntu and Peppermint, I can't see a good reason why you shouldn't. In the end it comes down to personal preference.

Re: QUBES and TAILS operating systems VS linux mint

the same premises linux mint does come from (secure, lightweight). I wouldn't say that's the main focus of Mint. The homepage says: The purpose of Linux Mint is to produce a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. There are distros that focus more on...

MX Linux. But keep in mind that the internet itself is much heavier than it used to be and your machine has simply not kept up with the times.

some of the Mint-Weenies still avert their eyes and prance away from it. Their choice and who am I to condemn? But you're fine with calling them (or us, rather) weenies? Re: Newbie: Full disk encryption - as with TrueCrypt under Windows 7/10

but, if you did backup elsewhere - then you'd to encrypt that too,, wouldn't you ? otherwise, it's pointless in encrypting just the Full Disk, isn't it ? No? If you take your computer with you, and it's encrypted, and you have a backup at home in a safe place (say, a locked vault)... how would that...
