Re: Linux mint 18.3 set me a password upon login, without me requesting it

Can you access the files when the USB drive is in another computer? I tried to start it on a different computer, same thing. Which files? I definalty can acces the files, but I don't see the files, which were saved on my desktop as well as any other loations. I did a search by some words, which wer...

Re: Hopping up the kernel family ladder - things to consider before leaping?

Is there anything risk but stability when switching kernel families? Say I upgrade from 4.4 to 4.13 and reboot. Might I find that e.g. Thunderbird or Sublime Text needs a new package, which when I install will get in the way of me moving back to 4.4 if 4.13 proves unstable? No, as far as I know, th...

Re: Can i use window 8 and linux in same computer?

Yes, that is generally possible. it's called a 'dual boot' setup and it's done by installing windows 8 first, and a Linux based OS after that.

Re: Kids can't use computers

The 'dead threads' rule exists because in support topics, old threads make for confusion because they are usually about different versions of Mint. Here in the Open Chat section, there are no support topics, so that rule doesn't apply here. No one objects to the Mint Café thread being resurrected ag...

Re: Terminal cannot start GUI apps

But using directly File or Update Manager won't work either. That makes sense, because the ownership of certain files in your home directory is now messed up no matter which application you try to use. I can't tell you how to check for ownership issues but I know other people will be along who can....

Re: Linux mint 18.3 set me a password upon login, without me requesting it

Hello, Did you actually install Mint to the USB drive, or were you running it 'live'? I suspect the latter. I installed it using the "Yumi", it creates multiple OS installations an USB flash drive. Nothing like that happened with 18.1. I am using it live, I believe. Did you go through the installer...

Re: Terminal cannot start GUI apps

If you're in the habit of opening GUI applications with sudo and/or su , then you have most likely created permissions problems which are now giving you trouble. Graphical applications should always be started from a terminal with gksudo or gksu . Otherwise, any file they write to becomes owned by r...

Can you resize it? I'm sure Inkscape can do that as well.

Re: which app for resizing .png and saving as .svg

Since .svg is a vector format, and .png is a bitmap, you'll need a bit more than just 'save as'. Inkscape can import a .png, then you have the option 'trace bitmap' which turns it into a vector image, and then you can save it as a .svg.

Re: Solved Installing the Irdium Browser

I didn't. I used the commands given here: https://iridiumbrowser.de/downloads/debian
and entered them in the terminal one by one, and that installed the browser. No idea where to, but it worked fine!

Re: Unexpected shutdowns

If it happens in both battery and plugged in mode, it could be overheating. In that case, I'd install psensor so you can keep an eye on the temperature.
If it seems high:
Maybe the fan is faulty or the machine is full of dust? Maybe the thermal paste is too old and not doing its job anymore?

Choose the previous kernel in GRUB and boot from that. Go into Update Manager and remove the non-suitable kernel.

Re: Update failure, has killed Linux Mint Cinnamon

So make a backup before you do anything else. Boot into a live medium, and use that to copy your data.
And in the future, please make regular backups; all data that is not backed up should be regarded as data that can be lost at any moment.

Re: Cinnamon vs Mate

I was just curious if the OS in Mate is trimmer than Cinnamon is. When I loaded it into VM and saw that it totally lacked any of the features from Cinnamon, ie, a stock set of Office like stuff, helpful apps for images, etc.... I had to assume that it was just the very basics required to make Mint ...

If you like ads, don't complain.
If you don't, make them go away. Either way, don't complain.

Re: Linux mint 18.3 set me a password upon login, without me requesting it

Did you actually install Mint to the USB drive, or were you running it 'live'? I suspect the latter. If you don't know the difference, that confirms my suspicion. Try username 'mint' and an empty password. You should do an actual installation if you intend to keep using it. A 'live' medium cannot be...
