It is, in most cases. But then most beginners want to install on their harddrive. That is the default situation and so that is the easiest way.

Yes, that is a very good idea. Then after installation, you can keep it around in case something goes sideways, it's a great troubleshooting tool.

Yes, it would. If you make it into a bootable stick, then nothing else will be left on the stick; in the process of creating the bootable stick, it's formatted which also means it's wiped.
