MX Linux. But keep in mind that the internet itself is much heavier than it used to be and your machine has simply not kept up with the times.

some of the Mint-Weenies still avert their eyes and prance away from it. Their choice and who am I to condemn? But you're fine with calling them (or us, rather) weenies? I see. bucknema : the most recent version of the user guide is here: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/e...

Re: Newbie: Full disk encryption - as with TrueCrypt under Windows 7/10

but, if you did backup elsewhere - then you'd to encrypt that too,, wouldn't you ? otherwise, it's pointless in encrypting just the Full Disk, isn't it ? No? If you take your computer with you, and it's encrypted, and you have a backup at home in a safe place (say, a locked vault)... how would that...

Re: Newbie: Full disk encryption - as with TrueCrypt under Windows 7/10

Someone else will need to answer that as I don't use encryption. Please note that full disk encryption is not recommended for new Linux users. Too many folks getting in trouble (most of them by forgetting their passphrase, but there are other ways too). If you feel that you still want to do it, be s...

Re: Newbie: Full disk encryption - as with TrueCrypt under Windows 7/10

Any reason why you did not choose to encrypt during installation? As far as I know, that's the easiest way.
(I have no idea how Win10 handles encryption, or, frankly, anything.)

as most folks are trying to Stop using Google.
I respectfully disagree that this is the OP's real issue... surely everyone gets to decide that for themselves?

Re: how to download and start Linux?

You don't open them, you burn the .iso to a DVD or USBstick. Then you boot your machine from that, instead of from the hard disk.

Re: Cannot use the update manager (dpkg interrupted, can't even run in terminal)

Put sudo before the command. That's how you get temporary superuser privileges. Press enter after the command.
You will be prompted for your password; enter it (you will not get any visual feedback, not even stars) and press enter.

Re: I don't have a password, but it still asks me a password

If you went through the installer, it prompted you for a password.
If you are certain that you do not have a pasword, then you did not install Mint.

Is there an icon on your desktop called 'Install Linux Mint'?

No, it's retrieved from the host every time someone views a page where your avatar appears. It's not stored on the forum.
