Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Please take a little extra time after you complete this install to try to install printer drivers (HP is the best choice for any Linux OS). I'll give it a try - but no promises. Actually, I've never connected a printer to ANY of my Linux machines. Since almost all current printer drivers come in Wi...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Discovery app does not work and is featured on the desktop. It crashes every time I open it. Well, Neptune did not survive as a candidate. Discover also crashed on my machine every time I opened it (before and after the re-install). Finally, I used "sudo apt-get" to install Synaptic. I then did a r...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

There seems to be some confusion about Debian. You really do not need to load KDE (or any other desktop) on top of Debian manually. For KDE there are these ISOs with all that fuss already done for you. Understood - and Thanks ! That was my confusion... at first I thought there was a KDE iso, then a...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Has anyone tried Neptune 5?... That one looks interesting with a stable Debian base and the latest Plasma 5.12 lts release. VERY Interesting question. About the time you were composing your post I had started to think or wonder about the pluses and minuses of eliminating not just Mint, but also Ubu...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Sunny Beach !!! That's what I say real loud, in public, when what I really want to say is "son of a b**ch". 8) I got my kubuntu-18.04 installed. I re-used the /home partition but stepped on the (older) / partition. I am delighted :D so far. All my system settings (like the permissions I had modifie...

Professional Linux IT people don't of this kind of thing much.
Sewing a "I'm a NON Professional Linux IT person" patch onto the top pocket of my navy-blue wool blazer right now. I'll get one for my Biker-Club "colors" later.

I guess everybody does the best he/she can.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I downloaded kubuntu-18.04 last night. Later today (I hope) I will install it on top of my current kubuntu. When I first started using Linux I did not put /home on a separate partition. Then I read about a lot of people doing it and I thought I could see some potential benefit in that. So, for the l...

Look in /etc/xdg/autostart/ for a file called anydesk.desktop
Perfect !!! Found it; moved it; no more autostart. 8)

@phd21 - excellent information.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all who assisted !!!

Re: How do I prevent a program from auto-starting?

There should be a "Startup Applications" in your menu; if you're lucky, it'll be listed there. Also check ~/.config/autostart for *.desktop files. I had already checked those and found nothing. Also, I'm having the issue on an earlier version (pre-18). I have a feeling it's a service, I just haven'...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

my humble opinion is that you should just back up all your data files and do a fresh install... I believe I favor that approach as well. I think it's almost always better (when possible) to go with a "fresh start". I think I'll download the latest iso tonight. Thanks !! @Marziano - For an upgrade p...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I'm still so much of a newbie I have to ask questions that most folks have answered long ago. I listed the specs for my kubuntu testbed above if anyone needs to check. I installed that system several months ago, but it is already fairly outdated. Is there a good way to update what I have to the late...

Re: Need help to automate installation and customization

Making some progress. I have more questions: I'm assuming I can call apt from inside a bash script. If I call apt to do things (add a ppa, install a program, uninstall a program)... - Can I queue the requests or do I have to make a single call for each action? - Do I have to supply the admin passwor...

[Resolved] How do I prevent a program from auto-starting?

Someone recently wrote about "Anydesk" being a good replacement for TeamViewer so I installed it. That's the kind of program I use ONLY on-demand... I DO NOT want it ( Anydesk ) running 24x7 in the background. Anydesk autostarts when Linux or KDE starts, and the icon sits in the tray. I have looked ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I am posting this reply from my kubuntu testbed: It's a fairly puny machine... Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Would be curious where you heard that about Mint MATE. In another thread, or maybe way back in this thread, somebody wrote that they thought/heard that Mint would probably move to making Cinnamon its only distro. That may be pure speculation, but to consider it as a possibility you only have to loo...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

FYI in Nemo, View/Extra Pane (F3 shortcut key) runs it in split pane mode. As I mentioned earlier, I can barely remember details from that far back. Perhaps I should apologize - acknowledge my "mea culpa"; perhaps it was something other than split-pane that Nemo lacked, or did not do very well (or ...

Re: Suggestions for the Official User Guide(English Version 18)

Luckily, you can easily switch the default operating system with Grub Customizer. There have been several discussions about "Grub-Cust0omizer" (you can find them if you search). In the last one Mr. Richter actually joined the discussion to answer questions. I like it, and use it, but some of the Mi...

Re: Remmina or Teamviewer

Which version of Windows 10 does your son have? It looks like the RDP server is not officially available on Windows 10 Home editions I believe that the Home version does not support the client (he can't initiate a connection to you), but it runs the embedded server just fine (you can connect to him...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

It'd be like dissing an entire distribution just because you don't like its default web browser. I agree. Several years ago I forever discarded opensuse - simply because I didn't (still don't) like their logo. But, that's kinda the point is it not? My quality of life has not diminished because I ch...
