Re: Desktop icons moving around

zzzzzzzzzzzip Did you see that little gremlin run by? I only ask because it seems to have been living in my computer but has fled. In a totally bizarre scenario the following has taken place... 1. Some desktop icons reverting to their previous locations after every boot 2. Problem noted on Mint BB (...

Re: Desktop icons moving around

The auto arrange settings... Thank you for your reply. Sorry - I wasn't clear. I do NOT want to auto-arrange my desktop icons. One of the first things I did when I installed this OS was edit that setting to make sure "auto-arrange" is turned off. I have a basic pattern I have been using for years. ...

[Resolved?!] Desktop icons moving around

I believe I am running the latest Cinnamon distro (Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon). Every time I reboot 2-4 of my desktop icons (always the same ones) move to a different location. It's always the same icons and they move to the same location. Have I saved that configuration somehow? Is there any way to c...

Default user-id and password

Not sure I'm posting in the right place... please move this topic if there is a more appropriate location - Thanks In the old days............. In the system-settings panel on my old Mint-17.3/KDE there is a "SHARING" applet. One of its options is a "default" network user-id and password. I am now u...

I think you ought to pull your head in. Or, perhaps - out? Other name-change requests that have come up recently... Thank you Mint Team

I want to offer my THANKS to the Mint Team for the latest version of Cinnamon When I first came to Mint several years ago I was drawn in by the Mint-KDE distro. I really liked it and, since KDE was the only DE I had any experience with (several different distro's over several years... but always KDE...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I read that thread , you were told which package to install which was everything you needed I did install the package, I did read the documentation, I did solve the problem... but my feeling for how helpful they were - whether you and they like it or not - is that they were not even close to the he...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Plasma 5.13... ...Neon user edition As a general rule I stay as far away from "bleeding edge" as I can, but I think this is where I'm headed next (or maybe stay with Kubuntu). I have seriously backed away from Manjaro. One of the reasons is the issue with Grub; another is the differences in Arch-Li...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I downloaded the Manjaro-KDE iso. I ran it a couple of times as a live session. IT WAS FASTER ON MY MACHINE THAN ANY OTHER LIVE SESSION I HAVE TRIED !! So I installed it. It is NOTICEABLY FASTER than any of the other distro's I have ever used !! I am impressed. Also, I'm just having a lot of fun wit...

Re: How do I find and copy a program?

Apparently I'm doing something everything wrong Install dpkg-repack. Then... Already had latest version; Package created perfectly; Failed to install with "Dependencies unmet" Using the tortured and twisted logic between my ears I have also tried EVERY other method noted above. I've had no joy with ...

Re: How do I find and copy a program?

What distro? Or more important, what distro is the distro based on? Right now I'm trying to work with Kubuntu which is Debian-based. However, I would like to try installing on Manjaro once I have it running. Manjaro is Arch-based. Any idea how a program - packaged to install on a Debian-based syste...

You could download a .deb file for a package by running:sudo apt download Package_Name replacing the Package_Name with the actual package's name.
I think this is more like what I'm looking for. How does one find out what the package name is?

Re: How do I find and copy a program?

"Copy" may have been a poor choice of words but the concept is essentially the same. I want to install (not copy) the programs (ie. apt-get install Mintstick). That process should point to a package with all the dependencies noted/included. These programs had to be installed on my system somehow... ...

How do I find and copy a program?

I would like to install Mintstick Create and Mintstick Format on another distro. Is it legal to copy/use these programs elsewhere? (I assume it is since Linux software is generally distributable and free) I'd guess one first needs to know in which repository these programs reside, then do some sort ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Don't know why Manjaro hasn't been mentioned more often on this thread , It's taken Mint's #1 place on Distrowatch as far as hits go . It's polished , and smooth , definitely worth consideration as a replacement for those wanting to stick with KDE. Almost sounds like it might have been a good repla...

Re: Applications (Firefox, Software manager) not loading

If I was in this position, and assuming it is not an emergency, I would download the distro again and re-install. I always believe that when strange things happen it's best to start over if at all possible (the original download may be corrupt). If the same thing happens again even that will tell yo...

[Resolved] Can someone build a bootable GRUB utility ?

I'm looking to see if someone already has - or might be able to cobble together - a bootable utility that does nothing but rebuild GRUB. All the Linux installers I have used have a GRUB utility at the end which probes for all the OS's it can find, then generates a new GRUB. Lately I have been instal...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Bad weather in the southern US has kept me away from my work for several days. I finally did get the Debian-KDE iso downloaded and installed. direct download: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/9.4.0-live+nonfree/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-9.4.0-amd64-kde+...

Re: Password not recognised

There is another fairly common situation with passwords and laptops... On many/most laptops there is NOT a separate numeric keypad - the numeric keypad is built into the standard keyboard. You may have to use compound (2 or more) keystrokes to enter a number from that keypad. This is controlled by t...
