Re: How to empty .Trash-0 owned by root

Cosmo has pointed out, in another thread, that there is no good reason for root to own permission of anything in the home directory.

Your problem could be as simple as changing permission to user.

Change the username to whatever it is for you.

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R username:username ~/

Re: Linux Mint randomly freezes

Do you still have the error:

Code: Select all

FAT-fs (sdb1): Volume was not properly unmounted. Some data may be corrupt. Please run fsck.
If you need to run fsck, first unmount sdb. I assume it's a thumb drive.

Perhaps Daisuke installed this package in the home directory, but used sudo while doing it.

Beginners might find that error message confusing, since sudo is needed to run that dpkg command.

Re: Dual Boot LMDE 5 and Mint 20.3

Some loaders (like Fedora Anaconda) also give you the option of not installing GRUB, so you can keep your current one. Manual install of Mint without the bootloader, as pbear mentions should be available by running ubiquity -b in the terminal from the install medium. Remember to sudo update-grub if ...

That one is really good. Don't even need to hit Enter.

The package name is incorrect for Ubuntu. It should be fsearch, not fsearch-trunk (in case anybody wants to install it).

Re: cannot install fsearch SOLVED

Thanks Planew. I found sudo apt install fsearch-trunk on a site explaining how to install fsearch! It's not the first time an incorrect package name gets used on a website. Another site I visited, when looking up the ImageMagick Identify command, was saying to use magick identify when the actual co...

Re: Enable multilib

You should look up multilib with Ubuntu since Linux Mint is based on that.

Are you sure pacamn.conf is the correct name. There is pacman.conf but that is for the Arch Linux package manager.

Re: How to empty .Trash-0 owned by root

In cases where root owns something in .cache you can open as root the .cache directory with Nemo to delete those files, or you can use the terminal. If Nemo only offers to move to trash, it would be better to use the terminal, since those trash files will still be owned by root. sudo rm -r /.cache/v...

The errors say the file is not valid yet (invalid for another 10h 32min 35s). Take what it says literally and wait 10 hours and 32 minutes, then try the update again. http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/focal-security/InRelease Origin: Ubuntu Label: Ubuntu Suite: focal-security Version: 20.04 Co...

Re: Is it safe to delete this file ?

Once you are able to boot, perhaps another problem is too many Timeshift snapshots. Pjotr's tutorial, item #7, deals with this directly. You should save them to a different drive. If your main drive begins to fail, you don't want them on that drive. If you don't install much software, then 1 weekly ...

You can add manually the PPA from their website:

https://launchpad.net/~rock-core/+archive/ubuntu/qt4/

Add at your own risk though. This package is unsupported.

Re: [Feature, not defect] "Update Manager" doesn't automatically 'Refresh' when manually opened and not already in tray

I don't have the Update Manager on startup. Did so to save on boot time. I have the Initial refresh and Recurring refresh both set to 1 minute. At least half the time it shows me updates when I fire it up, which I usually do late in the afternoon or evening, normally once per day. If it doesn't show...

Have you tried going to Synaptic Package Manager and installing VLC.

Version 3.0.9.2-1 is there.

Re: Kernel panic (Linux Mint 20 didn't shut down - blank screen)

So maybe libpcre2 is supposed to be there. Would it help or hurt to remove what's installed and reinstall? I don't know why you would need to uninstall then reinstall. I can't see it changing anything. Just install the missing ones. These are installed on my system. libpcre2-16-0 libpcre2-32-0 libp...

Re: Kernel panic (Linux Mint 20 didn't shut down - blank screen)

You can add a better search quick filter to Synaptic by installing apt-xapien-index . It's more accurate and faster than the default method. libpcre2 brings up 6 packages already installed on my system. Since I didn't install them, they're obviously supposed to be there. Pcre2-utils is not installed.

Re: how partitions looks like in linux ?

It could be sda1, sda2 and sda3 but you should check this with the Disks program from the menu or as rene suggests lsblk if using the terminal. That will tell you how the partitions are labeled.
