[Solved] Can you respecify the \home partition after installation?

Hello, I recently upgraded Mint on my backup iMac from 19.1 to 21.2. It had Home on a separate partition, with about 20GB allocated to / and about 100GB allocated to /Home. I obviously wasn't paying attention during the upgrade, and when it asked if I wanted to replace Mint 19 with Mint 21 I just cl...

Best 5.1 DVD audio ripper?

I want to extract the separate 5.1 channels from a DVD Audio disc. A few years ago I downloaded DVDAE and a quick test seemed to work, but the free trial expired before I actually did anything with it. I only have a couple of discs to do, so don't want to pay for something I'm not going to use again...

Re: Dual boot setup - Will a clean install / upgrade of Win 10 mess with the boot loader

without writing down exactly what i did, so don't really want to have to start from scratch! I made that mistake a long time ago, upgrading LM17 to LM18, couldn't remember what I'd installed or how. Ever since then, I have a launcher on the desktop pointing at a text file on my backup drive. Every ...

Re: Dual boot setup - Will a clean install / upgrade of Win 10 mess with the boot loader

Windows won't touch LM, but he'll break the boot, that's for sure. All user settings are located in the home folder. Install the Back In Time program on the LM - it's there in the software manager and use it to back up your home folder to external media - it's easy. This way you can even change the...

Re: Dual boot setup - Will a clean install / upgrade of Win 10 mess with the boot loader

Sounds like you are booting legacy, to confirm that run efibootmgr , if it says EFI variables are not supported then it is legacy, anything else is UEFI. With legacy boot, the bootloader lives in the first sector on the drive so re-installing win will overwrite grub and you will need to re-install ...

Re: Dual boot setup - Will a clean install / upgrade of Win 10 mess with the boot loader

Err... where did I say I don't have any problems? Hello, I have a dual boot Win 10 / Mint laptop. I've just upgraded my HD from 160GB to 500GB, and with the extra space finally upgraded from Mint 19.1 to 21.2. All seems good! If you have problems, then the way to go is to reinstall both OSes - Wind...

Re: Dual boot setup - Will a clean install / upgrade of Win 10 mess with the boot loader

Given that you normally have to install Windows before Linux for dual boot to work properly, I'm wondering whether upgrading Windows is going to rewrite the boot loader and prevent me getting into Mint. Anyone done this and/or have advice about how to get it right? This is 100% certain. If you don'...

Dual boot setup - Will a clean install / upgrade of Win 10 mess with the boot loader

Hello, I have a dual boot Win 10 / Mint laptop. I've just upgraded my HD from 160GB to 500GB, and with the extra space finally upgraded from Mint 19.1 to 21.2. All seems good! Mint is 64-bit, but Win 10 on the other half is only 32-bit. I've been looking at upgrading it from 32-bit to 64-bit, but ap...

Guidance please about upgrading from 19.1 to 21.2 on dual boot machine

Hello, I have an old Dell E6410, which until yesterday only had a 160GB drive on it, with Win 10 and Mint 19.1 in dual boot setup. I have waited until now to upgrade Mint because I wanted to install a larger HD first. Today I have a brand new 500GB SSD turning up (hurrah!), but unexpectedly yesterda...

Therefore Search for: <TR>
Replace with: \n<TR>
Simple when you know how!

[Solved] Inserting carriage returns using find & replace in text editor (xed)

Hello, I'm editing some html files that have come as one long block of text, and I'd like to have them laid out nicely on the page. Can I, for example, use global find and replace in xed to change all <tr> to carriage return <tr>, and if so, how? If not, is there another text editor I should be usin...

Re: Kernel updates still continue after end of life (19.1)...?

Hello, So, it's nearly two months since my initial post, I just looked at the Update manager, and there's another Kernel update available! This time it's 4.15.0.213.196. Don't know when it was released, as I haven't checked for updates for a while, but I thought surely by now they'd have stopped... ...

Kernel updates still continue after end of life (19.1)...?

Hello, I'm still running 19.1, but planning on upgrading shortly (just really busy right now). I was a bit surprised when Update Manager just gave me a new kernel, 4.15.0.211.194, given that it's at end of life. I clearly don't understand the technicalities of this, but I assumed that after the E.O....

19.1 E.O.L. - Recommendations for an old (dual boot) laptop?

Hello, I haven't been on the forum for ages, so only just spotted that my 19.1 Tessa version of Mint had reached end of life. I'm a bit unsure about the best option for upgrading, and could do with some expert advice from you good people! The laptop is a Dell Latitude E6410 dating back to about 2010...

My laptop dates from 2010, and it can't write to a 16GB card from 2016, and yet it can write to a 32GB card from 2022. That doesn't tie up with what you're suggesting.

Re: Why might my SD card be taking DAYS to format...?

Mint will not read/write the SD card in my camera when plugged into the SD card reader in my laptop (T430), but has no problems when plugged into a SD/usb adapter. No idea why, I live with it?? Thank you! That's got to the root of the problem. I took the SD card out of the internal card reader in m...

Re: Why might my SD card be taking DAYS to format...?

Thanks for the reply. The point about Volkswagen's own cards is that they apparently have a CID code embedded in them which the car infotainment system recognises. There are hacks which can enable the unit to read other cards, but I don't want to go down that route (no pun intended!). One explanatio...

SOLVED: Why might my SD card be taking DAYS to format...?

Hello, I'm trying to format a 16GB SD card, and after 24 hours it's only done 2GB. sd_format.png It's a VW Sat-Nav card with 2016 maps on it, which I wanted to upgrade to 2022 maps. I followed the instructions on their website, downloaded the update, deleted (after backing up!) the old version, and ...
