Re: Installed OTF font styles are missing in certain programs

Thanks for the suggestions! A search shows - - install libotf and libotf-bin (not installed by default for me) libotf is installed, I checked that already before posting. Installing libotf-bin: no change. (Building font cache: no change. Sudo-building font cache: no change.) - put the fonts in /usr/...

Installed OTF font styles are missing in certain programs

Hi everyone, I have an issue where certain OTF fonts are not recognized. This happens when there's a family of fonts, each with their own file, and in the metadata they all have the same name, but a different style. Some of these then won't show up Inkscape or LibreOffice. However they do appear in ...

External hard drive does not spin down anymore

Hi everyone, I'm running Linux Mint 17.3, on a Dell XPS 13 (inxi output attached.) I have an Iomega external hard drive, shows up in lsusb like this: Bus 002 Device 062: ID 059b:0576 Iomega Corp. I used to be that this drive automatically spun down after a while of not being used. But recently, this...

How to read obfuscated PDFs?

Hi everyone, sometimes you run across a PDF where the fonts have been scrambled in a way similar to this: http://spivey.oriel.ox.ac.uk/corner/Obfuscated_PDF On Xubuntu 16.04, with either evince, okular, or pdfgrep, I can search within these PDFs (and copy text). On Linux Mint 17.3, I can't. I assume...

Re: The mdm login screen not displayed on monitor connected via DisplayPort

Porbably that messed-up monitors.xml comes from when I used xrandr to add a resolution for my screen that didn't exist before. (Burdened with a high-DPI display...) Now I followed your instructions, but then I again had to set the resolution for the laptop's display, because it went back up to 3200x...

Re: The mdm login screen not displayed on monitor connected via DisplayPort

When I connect the laptop and close it, the setting it choses is to have only the main screen on, and the external one off, but not mirrored. I don't understand how you can connect the laptop. Do you mean when you connect the external monitor and then close the laptop lid, then the laptop's screen ...

Re: The mdm login screen not displayed on monitor connected via DisplayPort

First you should open System Settings > Display and be sure the checkbox next to Mirror Displays is marked. Hi robim, thank you for this hint! Indeed if I turn on "mirror displays" the text terminal is displayed. (I haven't been able to test it for the mdm login screen yet.) Also when I enable mirr...

The mdm login screen not displayed on monitor connected via DisplayPort

Hi everybody, I'm using a Dell XPS13 with Mint 17.3, Cinnamon 2.8.8. I have an external monitor connected to my laptop's mini-DisplayPort with a VGA adapter. I then close the laptop so the built-in monitor is turned off and I only use the external one. Now the mdm login screen and also text terminal...

Re: Gdk-WARNING: cinnamon-session: Fatal IO error 11

No luck so far, but just to help people identify that they have the same issue, here's a list of situations where this crash occurs for me: - reproducably -- Dragging a "crop" window in gThumb to the edge of the picture -- Scrolling down in a particular PDF with the Firefox PDF viewer - sometimes --...

Something like screen or tmux for GUI applications?

Hi everyone, with my current computer I've always had issues where Xorg crashes for some unknown reason, taking the whole session with it. (Others have the issue, too: viewtopic.php?f=208&t=159435) After a year I haven't been able to figure out why, so I'm giving up on that for now, continuing to sa...

Re: Linux Mint 18.1 “Serena” Cinnamon released!

I was wondering, since I haven't found a recent discussion about this elsewhere (last one 2014): With Ubuntu using Canonical's own Mir nowadays, are there plans for Mint to follow suit in some future version? Or will it rather go along with Wayland, or stay with Xorg?

Re: How to protect xorg.conf.d from apt/dpkg?

Thanks for pointing me to apt-file, which I'm ashamed to say I didn't know. Indeed I can tell that the package was updated nine days ago from version 1.15.1-0ubuntu2.1 to 1.15.1-0ubuntu2.7 when I ran apt-get upgrade, and xorg.conf.d was modified at the same time. Around a few corners, but in the end...

How to protect xorg.conf.d from apt/dpkg?

Hi everyone, recently I noticed that some configuration I had made in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf seems to have vanished. I don't know how to look at the history of files according to apt/dpkg, so I don't know exactly when that happened. What I'd like to rather know now: how can I prote...

Re: Can't switch sound output to USB headset

This seems to be similar to https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=109530 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1007575 Although the former is a thread from 2012 and the latter is a bug with a fix released already for Precise (12.04), whereas 17.3 is based on Trusty . Still, I t...

USB headset is added as keyboard/mouse!

I'm closer to a solution: when re-connecting the USB cable, there is some output in Xorg.0.log: [203100.864] (II) config/udev: removing device Logitech Inc. Logitech USB Headset H340 [203100.884] (II) evdev: Logitech Inc. Logitech USB Headset H340: Close [203100.884] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" [2031...

Can't switch sound output to USB headset, is added as keyboard

Hi everybody, right now I'm having a strange issue which I've never encountered before, and I'd appreciate it if someone has an idea how to troubleshoot this :-) My headset shows up in lsusb: Bus 001 Device 040: ID 046d:0a38 Logitech, Inc. Re: Windows stutter when being dragged

Check whether cinnamon is using a lot of CPU time when you do that. I had this problem, too, and it lead back to a certain applet (sticky@scollins). See here: viewtopic.php?f=208&t=211771&p=1104861& ... n#p1115214

Over on the Arch forums, I found a similar discussion where cinnamon throws a "Fatal IO error 11" (although with different causes and different effect) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172359 What's interesting is that people there report the issue being fixed by following the instructions...
