Re: Move the Home directory into the root partition

don't understand your desire to do what you say, but having /home in a separate partition is much preferable for security reasons, and safe keeping of the data.

Re: Looking at laptops to replace a bad one

the alienware was too short on features, ruled it out.

ASUS won again.

Re: Finding were Apps are stored

when I download an app, I put it in /Downloads/XYZapp so that I can find it again quickly if I delete, and decide later I want to reinstall it. or, if I am making up a new PC for someone, I know where to get everything in a hurry off my extUSB backup drive which is a copy of /user/Downloads, actuall...

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

So, I would like to hear from an engineer's viewpoint, why would that be? and, IF, a soft starter could be installed, could I do it in a manner where it would only be put to use at my call? as in, I have now started up the AuxGen and need to run the A/C compressor... If, as I would expect, the moto...

Looking at laptops to replace a bad one

I decided against the 1st one that I looked at, reviews weren't good. I am now looking at https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/alienware-17-r5 Alienware 17 R5 which has a very solid feel keyboard per the reviewer. something that is very important to me, and I never look at the kybd when typing....

Re: Time Shift troubles

do NOT include your Home directory.

that is NOT what Timeshift is made for, it is to provide backups for the OS,
not your data.

use a good data backup program LuckyBackup, BackInTime, etc..

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

I installed a full NEMA 200 Amp Transfer Switch Panel, to switch from Commercial Power to Standby Power. It is a manual switch... Up = Public Service, Down = AuxGen A contactor (large mains voltage relay) & some way of auto-starting the generator would be good! You are precisely correct. My avocati...

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

Are we talking 50A at 115V single phase or is it 3 phase. You could always try fitting a soft starter on the HVAC to reduce inrush current. Note my electrical engineering degree is over 40 years old, probably not the best person to offer advice :) Got to thinking on this, and I remember reading in ...

I saw in the news, that a billionaire French citizen has donated an immense amount of money to help get the Restoration underway.

Oddly his name is not listed in this news story.

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

Came home from work today to a dark house. Power was out for three hours, not sure how long before I got home. No idea what caused it, since it's not windy out. It's raining, but that's normal around here. The Freezer and Refrigerator stuff should be okay, since the doors were not opened. we have a...

Makes no difference what PC it is booting up on, can't help with the rest of your questions.

You have turned off Secure Boot, and set USB as the 1st bootable option?

I always set my PCs like this
  • USB
    DVD
    SSD/HDD

Re: erase factory recovery

The only thing I know about laptops is they can be very touchy to work on. What I did on my pc is burn the recovery system to dvd because it didn't come with disks but does allow you to do that. Then I tested it to make sure the recovery actually works, and it did. Just in case. But I don't see any...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 - File Transfer Between Ext4 & NTFS Partitions

I learned long ago, way before Linux came into being for me, that the "move" command is extremely dangerous. So much so, that I never, ever, use it anymore. If something causes a disruption in the complete "move request", you end up with damaged file structure and lost files. A simple "cancel operat...

Re: Interest: Coming to a PC near you - 56 cores, 112 threads and sucking 400 Watts

I got a real laugh out of their Price point $many That part made me laugh too. "If you have to wonder/ask how much, then you can't afford it", as the saying goes. Guess that's why they didn't actually list a price there (or perhaps pricing is still TBA...but we all know it's gonna cost a fortune). ...
