Re: At the Mercy of the local WiFi police

Left Colorado's mountains in my rear view mirror, stayed overnight at Gunsmoke RV Park in Dodge City, Kansas. Nice place, we will be back here. But, the WiFi is a conundrum.... wide open, no codes required, as the owner has us on his ranch and nothing is close enough to him to "borrrow" his WiFi.......

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

Not a newbie anymore, but no where close to being a nerd with Linux. I have to keep notes and refer to my notebook to make things work right the "first time". But, after trying a lot of distros, I chose Mint Cinnamon simply because I wanted an OS that used the same set of keyboard and mouse commands...

Re: Cashless Society is getting closer

I appreciate the disaster zones, but having lived all of my life in the desert arid Southwest USA, the worst things that we get are Tornadoes that will strip anything within its' path down to concrete or dirt. I lived through one of those in 1964 at Shepherd AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. 1 mile wide ...

Re: Batteries

I tried a lot of distros before I settled on Mint Cinnamon. I am on my 2nd go 'round with it, started with 17.x Cinnamon and when 18.3 was released I did a new install. Have never regretted that decision. I find the Power Manager in Mint to work for me pretty good. what I really like is that I can c...

Re: At the Mercy of the local WiFi police

good idea, will do that, i have a 2nd problem in that the Dell' power cord charger was toasted by the bad RV mobile charger that was spiking 200+ volts every 5 seconds. I have a Universal charger from Best Buy "guaranteed" to work, but Dell does not recognize it as a valid charger, and posts a messa...

Re: Effect of deleting old snapshots in Timeshift?

slipstick, what is the difference between what your script does and just copying the entire Timeshift folder to an external drive? For example, it appears that the default storage location for snapshots is simply /timeshift. If I were to copy /timeshift to an external hard drive, would this do the ...

Can you get into BIOS and turn OFF the UEFI ?

If you can, that should allow you to over-write the HDD and install anything you want.

Re: At the Mercy of the local WiFi police

the USA is such a huge expanse of country, that covering all of it with cellsites is just not practical... low population density will not give the carriers enough revenue to do that. and here where I am now, it is in the Rocky Mountain range, and the laws of physics preclude a cell signal getting b...

Re: At the Mercy of the local WiFi police

1.5Mbps - luxury!!! Until about 18mths ago our download speeds were 100k. Now after a lot of waiting, a lot of lobbying and some government funding, we now have 30Mbps. Without that change I would never have come back to linux - impossible to download anything to play with. Needless to say, I live ...
